Exclamation stock se can last an 11000 rpm run....

i unfortunitally found this out.. i put my car on the dyno yesterday so that i could tune it.. my tach was not working (fixed it this morning) and so i was watching the monitor.. he hooked up the computer to the trailing coil, so i figured that it must be correct... we started, and it was taking a little while. about a minute later i was starting to wounder why it was taking so long to rev to 8k (but it sounded so good that i could not stop)... and then snap.. turns out that the comp was set to read at half, so when it said that i was at 5500 rpms, i was really at 11,000.

luckily it was the power steering belt. scared the **** out of me though.....car still runs fine, but has a bit of an oil leak now.... i am just glad that the internals in this motor are stronger than the ones in my 78 rx4 motor.

on the up side.. the car makes 156 to the wheels. stock internals, n/a.... respectable.

HOW IN THE HELL DID YOU NOT NOTICE???? there a HUGE difference between 5500rpms and 11000 rpms.. even 3000 and 6000.. sorry dude, but thats fucked up that you didnt notice your car was sitting that high.

11k? Wow! Glad to hear the engine lasted! Post the graph up. What mods do you have?

Dude that's crazy. Post the dyno graph! I'm wondering how a 13B on stock internals spun up to 11k... That is truly evil! I have a '84 6-port 13B and it absolutely buzzes at redline (7k). You must be mad!

Oh yeah, the next time you go to a dyno you probably want to make sure you set up the tachometer right! I wouldn't want to pick up the pieces of that mess...

If the dyno was reading the wrong RPM would the HP reading even be correct?

Just wondering

The motor may seem fine now, but you may have sliced a large fraction of the operational life off this motor because of the mixup. I hope not, but 11k rpm is absolutely nuts on a stock motor.

Ummm, you don't know the approx RPM of your car just by the sound? Lucky something (read flywheel) didn't come apart. Post a pic if you got it, I want to see this crazy graph. Hope she keeps purring for many miles.

The flywheel/clutch in a 1st gen actually sits in front of the firewall, not too much danger of getting your feet cut off.

Stock stationary gears? I'd pull those out and throw them away if I were you.

You said "oil leak". From where?

i just put a new exhaust on, so i donot have the sound down yet.. i was luckey.. like i said, i was just enjoying the sound tooooo much... mmm. it did sound beautiful in that garauge. i even had four or five people wander in to watch me dyno and tune it.

car didnot make power to 11,000, just reved that high.. i will post the graph if i can find a scanner...

it is a stock port se motor, racing beat dual exhaust, mikuni intake with custom cai and heat shelding, two msd 6a's and 3 blaster 2 coils. flywheel is a 9 pound flywheel (yup .. that is right.. 9 pounds.), and the cluth/pressure plate are centerforce. i am lucky that they lasted.

i fixed the oil leak comming from the oil temp/pressure sender (on the oil pedistal) but still have one that looks like it is comming form the oil pan seal. going to check that out tomorrow.

i pulled something like 152 on that run. pulled 156.8 a few runs later (i was tuning my carb).

i am not that worried about the longetivity of this motor. just need it to last a nother six months or so... hopefully i will have a new motor then (either turbo or n/a bridge. not sure which yet).

i cannot wait to get it onto the track (they would not let me run this weekend due to the oil leak). that power with the 5.12 rear end gears should make for a nice run. and @ 2300 lbs, it should definatly be respectable.

I'll take the first guess
13.60's at around 98-100mph

Later
and good luck

typically the higher rpms will start to "chatter" the apex seals, leaving chatter marks on the housings and eventually snapping an apex seal. haven't heard as much about the side seals being as affected. you must have that special edition motor that takumi's father put in the hochi roku.

I always thought you'd get rotor-to-side housing contact if you rev'd it much past 10k without clearancing your rotors..... your a lucky man, not to have roached you motor !
