Stock Nikki Modifications

I am looking for a thorough/comprehensive way to modify/simplify the stock nikki 4 barrel on my 1985 gs. I recently re-did the solenoid/vacuum spider and although it came out nice and looks new, it just made me think about how complicated the rotary emissions and carburetor are.

If there is a broken down way to strip the nikki with a stock setup and still be able to run the car relatively well, then I'm interested. I do not want to just start taking things off that I need.

Obviously things are there for a reason, but I want to simplify if possible.

Thanks!

You can also try searching any thread started by Sterling. I believe there are a few floating around that address mechanical secondaries and accelerator pump mods.

I was in your same shoes a month or so ago. The simplified way is to research how the carb works and what each thing does. Once you have completed that, everything is easy because you'll end up removing everything. I did the rebuild and mech. sec. at the same time but kept everything on the carb and motor. Car ran like crap so I ripped everything off. (carefully of course) Now this has convinced me to not swap a v8 or a VR6 (volkswagen motor) into the car. Try and stay away from holly carbs and such. The stock nikki has been proved to work great with a mild motor. Even a turbo 12a can maintain the stock carb. I'm sorry I couldn't give you specifics but there really is no other way but to look over the DIYs and memorize as much as possible.

I have a huge Monster Port 12A in my car and i run a mildly stripped nikki. I still have the HAC and richer solenoid on it, that's the only difference. Otherwise it's fulled stripped and has mechanical secondaries.(exept i did my own custom throttle linkage/arm setup) I love it, way better than my weber setup. Idles good, good torque, and is just unreal when the secondaries open up.

IMO mechanical secondaries are a waste of time. the vacuum secondaries on the nikki operate a little differently than like a holley. the vacuum system basically holds the secondaries closed until there is enough airflow to open them, once the vacuum "turns on" then basically you have mechanical secondaries.

so the quick and simple way is to just remove the spring from the vacuum chamber.

also if you look into the carb, its really pretty obvious where you can improve the airflow. for example, the screws that hold the throttle plates on are HUGE, they take up like half the throttle opening. you can also grind down the throttle shaft, which is way huge too.

you remove the cover and if a spring pops out, then you have a spring. if no spring pops out, then you don't.

if there IS a spring in there i'd put it back, Mr Yaw is a smart guy, and its perfectly acceptable to put a DIFFERENT spring in there than stock.

Good thoughts j9....I will keep that in mind when I consider it again. Just got the carb back on today and did the emissions removal/re routing for the rats nest. All seems well so far, hopefully my good fortune lasts on my first rebuild.
