Do a full tune up. If you're still getting smoke, try using the seafoam(please read how to do it the right way before doing). If after the seafoam is done you're still getting smoke, determine what color it is. If it's blue you're burning oil, white and you're burning coolant which means bad coolant seal and the 12A needs rebuilt. Let us know how it goes

Tell your friend congrats on the buy. Old school rotaries are the way to go. Oh, and if he thinks that car is fast then he has definitely never been in something fast. It will get walked on by practically everything, hahaha. If you do upgrades though, that will render different results. Like someone else said, carb, exhaust, ignition. Those things should yield good power increases. If he does need a rebuild he can always look into porting it as it is torn apart. Most importantly, though, he should be on this forum as well because it will be the greatest asset to have once something goes wrong. Search button will become God.

I just have one question.
Why do you guys call them FC3S? The S makes no sense whatsoever. It's a FIVE, not an S.
I was raised with two rotaries and NEVER heard my uncle refer to his FC as an FC3S.

^^^Wow. That was totally random and wrong section LOL. It is in fact an S and not a 5. That's just the Japanese code for them. SA22C for the 1st Gen, FC3S for the 2nd Gen, and FD3S for the 3rd Gen. I'm sure there is reasoning behind it with the chassis codes but I'm not too familiar with it. Just basic knowledge for me

Sorry, saw it on his pictures and had to ask.
And you're wrong. It is, indeed, a five. Look up any VIN from a second gen.

Uhhh SA22C isn't in any of the FB VIN codes but the Japanese still reffered to the 1st Gens as SA22C. Just because it's not actually in the VIN codes doesn't mean ****. It's been FC3S ever since 1985 in Japan. If you think it's wrong take it up with Mazda

Funny. A '79 Vin that I have off a junkyard car has SA22c in the vin. . . .
Yet my Uncle's FC has a vin with 35. . . NOT 3S.

All the Japanese people I've spoken with about the RX7 (mostly internet, one in high school) have simply referred to it as an FC, NOT an FC3S.

I call Firebirds Firechickens. Does that mean they're actually Firechickens? Maybe you better take that up with GM.

Apparently because Mazda said so. Don't remember them ever doing that, though. . . .
Oh well. People will always call them FC3S just like George W. will always insist that there's a reason for us to be in the middle east.

Yeah 79 and 80 VINs will have SA22C because that's what they were but 81-85 have what? FB. Look on any Japanese classification(oh wait that would take some searching) and they class them as SA22C, FC3S, and FD3S. Yes everybody shortens then down to SA, FB, FC, and FD. And the S4 FC's were also classified as FC3S.

To give an example, my old Gen 3 was FD3S- 116066. The Japanese do not use lower case that is why it is always 'S' rather than 's' and the engine '13B' not '13b'.

Mazda do not use the SA, FB, FC, FD as model variants but merely as VIN designations. At one time the alpha sequence showed body type, year of manufacture and factory. the FB VIN sequence was only used in the USA after the 1981 change to the seventeen digit VIN requirement. A typical Jdm 1985 gen 1 series 3 was SA22C702986 in the eleven digit format. Latter models used just ten digits. In addition, certain countries added a second identifer plate for imported cars, for example my Australian plate required under their design regulations[ADR] is 85-006 being the sixth car built by Mazda that year, with the VIN being only SA22 as a convertible, 'C' was used as coupe, and 'S' as a saloon/sedan.

Engine numbers are just !2A or 13B regardless of which engine type.
