stereo wiring
#2
I would actually just rewire the whole car, because who knows the quality of the original wires.
Besides if you are getting a new stereo, those wires are useless because they travel to the amps under the seat.

sorry i don't have a wireing chart.

You can reuse some of them. I would definately just run new speaker wire, but the power wires are most likely OK. The easiest way to figure out the different power cables is just to test them with a multimeter. One will always be powered, one will only be powered when the car is on or on accessory. This is how I wired my stereo and it has worked great. Good luck.

The blue wire is normally the ignition on wire. I would keep that wire and toss the rest. I just rewired my stereo from the stock wires and it made a huge difference. The + line off the battery and new ground allows your stereo to get full power even with sound cranked, lights, fans, blinker etc on.

You will have to remove the panel around the shifter to get access to two screws that hold the stereo surround panel. The shifter panel is easy to remove by gently prying it up from the rear. It is also easy to break. Two more screws are located in behind the ashtray. When you remove the ashtray, you will be able to access them. You will have to remove the **** off the heater/ac fan speed control. You will have the remove the ***** off the hot/cold and bilevel levers. These remove by simply pulling off. You will have two screws at the top of the panel. You will see them under the center vents. This will work for 81-83 cars. I am not sure about 79-80, or 84-85. Maybe someone else will chip in on the info for those years. Hope this helps.

Yes thank you that will be a big help.

My 85 doesn't have screws under the vents, just simple tabs that hold it in place. Be very careful pulling the A/C / radio panel as it can break very easily on the side if it catches. I know because I did that to mine. Once you take the panel off, the radio is held in by 4 screws I think.

on mine theres just he 2 screw on the bottom then the rest pops off once the dials are off. so whats this about an amp under the seat? im wondering because once i stumble onto a pile of money i will be replacing my stero.

be careful popping the dials off, use two small screw drivers at each side or you can snap those in half pretty easily.
as for the wiring, use a multimeter, i used my constant voltage from the clock power, pretty easy to find when you have the console off.
as for the rest, rewire it all, speakers, too. its very easy in these cars. the stock speaker wire is very thin and runs to the amps which are located under the rear storage bins. easiest just to run speaker wire under the center console to the rear speakers bypassing the amps all together. the fronts are even easier.
you really shouldnt need a harness if you can read your decks instructions and understand which wire is for what. its a very simple process.

i have a factory premium sound system offered on some 82gsl and 83 gsl and le. since my radio got stolen a while back i pieced together another exact system. i have pluged a black 6 pin canon that goes to the joystick to split into front and rear amps. the white 8 pin canon to the eq and then a 3 pin plug (box like, not round canon) and the antenna plug. it seems to have power but i have to hold in the tuning **** for a display but i cannot change the radio station frequency. and when i let go of holding the tuning **** the display goes away and the radio has no sound but the eq stays lit.
does anybody know for the 82-83 factory premium sound system what needs to be plugged for it to work? because i have gone through 2 premium sound system deck with the same results. im guessing im missing a single pin plug (box like) which might be the constant.

Does anyone work on the old radios to get them back up operational? Mine no longer plays AM and FM comes in very scratchy. The tape deck also has a loud hiss in it. I figure a little rewiring, some speakers and a stereo overhaul should take care of the tunes issue. But who can do the work? I think Infinity made the system originally.

^^^ nope Clarion did. i am not sure about who rebuilds the original radios but i would definately want to find out as well. i bought some original premium sound systems which i am pieceing together make my system operational. i am just missing a plug for the constant power. as far as i know these radios have lasted a long time and still function but one of my decks eats my cassette tapes.. good luck with your factory radios. they can be a pain to experiment on than to go out and install a new system and be worry free but people like me and you work on our cars to restore them to their stock specifications as they become more rare and their value goes up especially stock configurations. also welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay and we will gladly help when you need. the search button is always a good tool as well.
