I have a wheel from an 82 in my 85 it fits just fine... the horn cover is all rubber and it snaps onto a round piece of metal make sure your prying on the rubber not the metal... the rubber u can get off with just your nails and hand...

Thumbs up Steering wheels

Well, I can tell you that all steering wheels should be interchangeable between 1st gen Rx-7's. I've had a 2 spoke 3 spoke and 4 spoke, 1st gen Rx-7 wheels in my GSL-SE, all fit perfect! I believe it was a 17mm bolt that holds the wheel on. Gonna need a rachet and small extension to get to it. Good luck pulling it off once you get that nut off!

I have a series 6 wheel on mine, it fits nicely. I also have a series 4 steering wheel, and it also fits on, but rubs a little on the plastic behind, the noise is a bit anoying, that why I put the series 6 one on it.

Partly wrong, Grasshopper Gump

Gump,

Not quite right. The '80 and earlier steering wheels are different than '81 and later. The later ones sit on a tapered out shaft.

A favorite application of mine has been to retrofit the wood steering wheel and handbrake lever from a cosmo. Direct fit into a '79-80, direct fit into a 2nd Gen (with cutting off and mounting of the mounting nipple from the 2nd Gen steering wheel). But to put into my '81 and later into my '85 I had to take it to a machine shop and have it machined to a taper that would fit properly.

so as not to start a new thread with the same title, i'll ask here:

any suggestions for a good aftermarket steering wheel on a budget? my stock wheel on my 83 gsl sheds rubber when it's hot. gets kind of annoying when i have black rubber speckles all over my hand.

i'm thinking about something hard and smooth, but big, too. my buddy has a small GT wheel on his scirocco and it's a pain to turn since it's so small.

If you do try to pop it off make sure your very carefull!! I just took the wheel off my 83 and broke the plastic nside the column that holds the wheel from moving in and out ~3/4 inch. I'm really pissed at myself for doing this, pain in the *** when your in a turn and the wheel wants to move out on you. Also when it's broken with the wheel moved out it won't turn off your turn signals.

Hope someone has a fix for this, my damn car has enough problems.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, homemade telescopic steering! I need a fix too.

do you know if these will bolt right on w/o any modification?

also, what is the size of the stock 1st gen steering wheel?

15"? i don't have power steering, so i'd like to keep as much leverage as possible.

And yes you need an adpter for practicaly every aftermarket wheel there is.

Dont know on the stock size of the wheels.

Im not sure if a 15inch wheel will cause you to loose all ur leverage.
