Steering Problem
Hey guys/gals. I just picked up an '84 GSL-SE a few weeks ago, and during the few kms that I've driven the car, I've noticed that the steering is very stiff. While rolling, the steering is as hard to turn as it would be if the car were stopped. There is also a huge on centre dead spot. I can turn the wheel about 10 degrees and the car keeps going perfectly straight. Another problem is if I turn the steering wheel full lock while driving at low speeds, I can hear a rubbing noise, almost like the wheels are going too far and rubbing against the body. I've only ever owned cars with rack and pinion steering, so I'm not to familiar with the different components of a recirculating ball type system. Any ideas on what parts may be to blame?
Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the world of 1st Gen RX-7's......
Use the search button as there is a wealth of information on this subject.
there are some "adjustments" that can be made to minimize the slop depening on how woreout the box is.

Since the car in question is an 84 SE, check to see if it has a power steering gearbox, but no pump or belt. Power steering became available in 1984, and was found more often on the SE. Lack of a pump or belt would cause the stiff steering and some of the center "dead spot".
As for rubbing at full lock, it's likely the tires rubbing the swaybar.
