Starter is dead....take it off and get it tested. If it's OK, then the black cap on the actual ignition cylinder on the steering column has broken one of the white plastic clips that keeps it snug for good electrical current. I had a thread many moons ago that discussed this and the cure but the pics are gone...it was a step-by-step "cure" thread.

Tapped Starter with hammer. It started cranking. Would not start. Then nothing. Tapped starter with hammer. it started cranking.Would not start. this went on numerous times. Finally tapped on the starter and nothing. Checked all cables and wiring to solenoid. I will remove starter and take it in to be tested. Anything else I can do

Had starter tested. Napa said it was bad. What are my options. How hard are they to rebuild? Where can I get a rebuild kit? Am I better off trying to find one at a Junk Yard. Should I buy a rebuild from an auto parts store. any advice will help. Have yet to start the car. I am worried about pouring in a bunch of $ and still not getting it to work.

can buy a new one for 110$ plus shipping but warranty is only 30 days. Found a local guy that does rebuilds. Will charge me 85 and warranty it for 90 days. He claims it will be as good as new or he will not complete the rebuild and charge me nothing. what do you think

In all likelihood, all your rebuilder will do is check continuity on the internal wiring and replace the solenoid. If you're not going to bother with a new one, you could do that yourself for less than $85. Just my $0.02.

We have a guy locally that does nothing but rebuilding alternators and starters for most of the area including for all of the industrial and agriculture industry and I have to say his failure rate is very minimal.
As far as what he needs, the solenoid is not his problem. The brushes are worn out. That is why I asked him to tap on the side of the starter to verify this.

Try jumping the starter directly with a screw ndriver or something. Your starter could be bad. Possibly a bad ground also.
