Starting issue, I've searched alot.

1984 gsl under 40k miles
Symptoms are, Mostly starts fine when cold. Only once has it done what it does.

Hot starts are a different story. Hit the key, sounds like when you try to start a car that is already running. That scratchy screech for just a second. But the car starts right up.
Had the starter checked, it was weak, gear comes out 3/4 and slowly extends fully. So I replaced it with one that tested great.
So with the new starter it started fine cold. Let it run a few minutes, shut it off, started fine. Problem solved? No It did the next day when I went for a ride and really warmed it up. Did the same thing

So I replaced the pos battery cable and bought a new battery. The old cable was nasty and the battery tested barely OK. The neg. cable looked good and clean. Still does what it does. Flywheel teeth looked fine.

Besides the hot start sound, the open door buzzer is faint at best. Once the idiot lights did not come on when I started the car and the a/c button did not work so I pulled over and turn the engine off, restarted slower and everything worked fine but it still did the scratchy/screech thing. Everytime I start it now, I make sure I see the idiot lights come on first. Might be two problems idk.

So I'm thinking someone has had this exact problem or just knows their stuff. I've read my *** off and have not found anything similar. Sorry for the long wording but it's late and I have to go to bed. I'll check this in the morning. I tried to work this out myself but I don't have near the knowledge most of you guys have. Thanks, Rick

Thanks, Come to think of it the sound did seem to come from there. It just sounded so much like a starter. I will try that.

Well that was it.
I assume I can just leave it unplugged and not have to remove the motor and everything connected to the carb.
Thanks again!

yeah you can either pull it out, or just leave it.

I believe there was a TSB about the cold start assist that recommend unplugging it.
