Starting/Idling Problem
I bought a 83 rx7 a few months ago and have been fixing things continuously. It has had this idling problem since I bought it but it has became a lot worse with winter setting in. See video link for details. Thanks in advance.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-puQGpTrW0

the carb probably needs some adjusting or cleaning. i've never had to use a choke, not even using the stock carb either, so u might want to search for check and choke relay and see what u come up with. they're suppose to stay out for a certain amount of time then pop back in. there's also a portion of the throttle that supposed to hold the idle up while the choke is out. how did it do at first start up when u went to look at it before buying it? did he mention any problems with it? do u work the throttle any while starting it?

yeah i can tell ur pumping it. that's why i say it may need some adjusting, not rich enough during cold starts. which will probably end up being alittle too rich during warm months. fixing the choke will help i'm sure. try this, see if holding the choke partially closed will allow u to hold the throttle steady without pumping.

The choke **** is held out by an electro- magnet in the switch. The magnet is energized and the **** stays out when 12v is supplied to the proper terminal on the choke switch. This 12v should come from the #1 water temperature switch. The switch turns off when the water temperature reaches around 160. Mine have always shut off when the gauge reaches around the 1/4 mark. This switch is threaded into the back of the thermostat housing. Two wires connect to this switch through connector B-12. One is 12v from the ignition switch and is Black/white. The other is Blue/white and it goes to the choke switch. Many times the wires break where they come out of the temperature switch. To test, if you connect the two terminals in the harness plug together the choke **** should stay out whenever the ignition is on. I use the choke whenever the car is not warm. I pull it out, start the car and push it back in until the idle is 1500-2000 rpms. Even here in Naples my car will die unless it is started and warmed up with the choke or revved like you are doing without the choke. You can also hold the choke **** out with a quarter placed, on edge, behind the ****. You might have other issues, but I would start by fixing/using the choke to warm up the car.

I would also check for vacuum leaks. This hose is often a problem.
