Starting after Storage

The car I am going to be buying '85 with a 12a (stock) has been in heated storage for 3 years, what are the details I should be aware of when starting a car that has been sitting for this long???

Thanks,

Mike.

Pull off the blue carb hat and pump the gas pedal. See if any gas squirts out from the throat of the carb. 3 yr old gar is probably going to be bad, so hopefully they drained or stored it with some sort of fuel stabilizer. Might need some fresh gas on hand to get er started. Gonna need a new strong battery (or push/pull start). Check the oil level, and the condition of the plugs.

Before you start, crank the engine over by hand to get the oil pump building up some oil pressure (you don't want dry bearings) Then give a little shot of oil down the throat of the carb, or pull the plugs to lube the apex seals and to bump the compression. Assuming your alternator belt is tight, you can spin it from there, if the engine doesn't want to spin, DON'T FORCE IT@+!@! Gently rock back and forth. If she's locked you might have more of a problem on your hands, but we have solutions in our FAQ's and archives. search carbon locked if you get that far.

Getting is started is the main thing, then you can rebuild the carb, change the engine oil, change the tranny fluid and differential, flush the brake lines, change the coolant, put a fresh set of plugs in, change the fuel filter, plugs wires cap and rotor if need, tires. Oh all kinds of neat things! Good Luck!

Mike-
depends HOW it was stored
If gas was left in lines and tank and NO gas preservative added - things could be pretty gunked up in lines and carb. 85 has a tank drain plug so:
1) the FIRST thing I would do is get the old gas out!!
2) pour a small amount (1/2 pint?) of motor oil down the 2 primary carb throats and - with fuel pump and ignition DIS!-Connected !! - dry crank the motor to circulate oil. 4-5 cranks should be plenty
3) pull and clean plugs of the oil
4) reconnect ignition, fuel pump
5) change fuel filter
6) pour in new gas
7) make sure battery is fully charged/ cable ends cleaned and lubed
8) make sure rad is full!
9) drain/install new engine oil, chg oil filter
10) crank her up!
Likely a good smoking out the pipes after the oil lube via carb, so don't **** of the neighbors! should disipate in a few minutes.

Hopefully carb hasn't been so gummed it won't run well - sometimes a rebuild will be required.
Check in with us once you get it running and Good Luck!!
Anyone else think of anything??
