started but flooding

Ok after 8 months my car is living again. Problem is i had a blocked up cat. Gutted it and that problem solved, i stripped the nikki down and havent did the secondary mod yet as i couldnt find a clear pic of what to tie. But right now when the car starts the secondaries are pouring fuel ontop of the butterflies and flooding the motor out. The car is not in time as i dont have a timing light and no adjustment to the carb is changing it.

the needles may not be stuck, but what condition are the needle heads in? i understand they can deteriorate and not seal if theyve been left too long. i had a similar problem with my machine, and replacing the needles fixed it

The needles and all was new from the rebuild kit. Good news is the secondaries no longer flood but i have to pour a little gas in the mains to get the motor to start. Cant adjust the carb much untill i get the motor timed. Needing a timing light. She is idiling at 1500 which im not worried about right now. As i know my mix and idle screw are out of wack. My biggest problem was the clogged cat. Now with headers only the kids in the neighborhood love me but not many other people.

I found a stupid mistake that i couldnt believe i didnt find earlier. The motor i put in was a bare shortblock and i swapped everything off my blown motor onto it. Only thing the new motor came with was the front pully. The pully was put on 1 bolt over or 120 off timing. Which explains why i couldnt get it into timing. Motor ran but would stop at 2500 rpm. Now till i rebrake it in i have hit 6g roughly and took it down the road and back with headers only. Ears are still bleeding but she runs great and is taking adjustments great.
Since the carb is stripped all the way, not even choke i have to pour a lil gas in the carb for her to start right up. Any ideas to fix that?

If your carb is working right just pump the gas pedal once, maybe twice, and the accelerator pump should squeeze enough gas in there for easy starting.

See unless the car is running i see no fuel entering the primaries. When the car is running i have fuel entering no problem. Old motor was pump pump pump turn car on pull choke and start. Now i have a stripped modded carb thats been fun learning how to work the bugs out of. But runs down the road and back great.

With the car not running you should be able to turn the throttle by hand and see fuel squirt from the accelerator pump nozzles into the primary bores.
If you don't you've assembled something wrong or left the bb's/ weights out.

Weights are in and installed properly. Checked a handful of times. Works perfect when running but nothing if it aint running.

Makes no sense. If the accel pump has fuel it should squirt running or not when the diaphragm is pushed.

Thats why i am stumped. Ive nevet seen this happen and the few people around here that have worked on carbs are equally stumped. Starts no problem on the first start of the day. After that i have to pour just a little gas in the carb and she will start right up. Runs great. But i cant figure out why the carb wolnt shoot fuel f the motor is not running. The carb is stripped, i went over every vacum yesterday to make sure no vacum nipple is leaking. Both sensors on the carb are taken off and the sensor pump in the airhorn was taken out like someone said to do. All jets are clean, weights in correctly. Im about yo rebuild another carb when i can buy a rebuild kit and try again.

thats bloody weird. if the accelerator pump isnt pumping fuel, the only thing i can think of is that the bowl is empty! is there any chance that the bowls can siphon themselves back into the tank if the pump is off and the car is sitting?

have you tried putting your finger over the pump jet to see if it's even pumping air?

edit: OR you have a leak in the bowls, and theyre emptying themselves out as the car sits... probably not likely given the rebuild, but hey its a weird scenario. what are the sightglasses saying?

The bowls are properly filled. Ive checked front and back atleast a dozen times with and w/o the airhorn on. But although yesterday i have a airleak or so i assume that i didnt have before. Car sputters and the back header is getting red hot.
