spray painting?

haha, i kwno this is a wierd question, but i was wondering if anyone has actually spray painted a full car, and how did it turn out? I was just wondering how a spray painting job can turn out if prepped/painted correctly. Are there special kinds of spray cans for this?

me and jorx81 spray painted our racecar a few years back. if it's a street car, it's definitely not a good idea, and it takes maybe $60 worth of paint.. I think it's about the same to just buy regular paint? not sure..

well whats a decent paint gun that i can buy to get a professonal looking job? Also what are the kinds of things that get sprayed? (Ex. Primer/basecoat/clear?) Does anyone know a good book i can buy that teaches all this stuff?

I hate to admit this, but I painted my RX7 with spray cans. I did it one section at a time, over a period of about six months. The advantage of doing it that way, at least for me, was that I could still drive the car every day. Some online outfit supplied the paint, both the color and clearcoat, and they matched the '85 blue metalflake perfectly.

I'm pretty happy with the results, but then, I'm easy to please. The car is at least very shiny, although it took a lot of elbow grease to rub out the clearcoat.

That said, there's no way you can duplicate a real paint job with cans, at least in a metalflake, no matter how good the prep. The biggest problem is laying down an even color coat. You're putting on thin coats anyway, and if the thickness of the coat varies, the alignment of the metalflakes will vary too, making the color lighter near the edge of the spray, darker near the center. You end up with streaks, particularly on the hood and roof. It's not that noticable, but you can tell.

Another problem with the thin coats is a few spots where the clearcoat wore through when I rubbed it out. These were mainly on creases--doors and hood. Again, only a couple of places, barely noticable, but not perfect.

Probably the thing that bothers me most is the spider-webbing I got in a couple of places. This was likely prep or weather-related, but I can't help thinking the thin paint contributed to it. This only happened on the small piece at the base of the winshield, and one door. From more than five feet away, you can't see it. I keep thinking I'll repaint those sections one day, but I guess it doesn't bother me enough yet. More likely I'll just go with a professional job next time.

For now, it's fine. I have to say it looks far better than it did when I bought it, just not quite as good as my old '81.

Google autobody painting. There are some good how to web pages and forums.

I've painted a few, takes a lot of time and more tools than one would think, mostly hand tools, sanders, air sanders, grinders, etc. The last gun I bought was a SATA RP 2000, they run about 400+. It's real easy to wrap up over 2k in tools, just to do a decent prep job, before the paint.

i did mine with 3 cans of flat black spray paint! haha, and it looks like ***. thing is i painted it on the last low humidity hot day of the year and havent had a chance to put on more coats. im sure after a few more coats it will even out nicely.

none the less it beats my totally flaked, messed up maaco job that was on there before. theres a pic in my sig, but it doesnt do it justice, it actually looks better now since those pics were taken when i wasnt finished and the 'streaks' and such seem to went away after a few washes.

If you wanna do some painting on the side I think something like devilbiss would suffice. you can get a pair of paint guns for under 200 bucks. You could use one for primer and the other for base and clear. Prepping, I think is more important than the actual painting. You can have a 600 dollar sata gun but if you don't prep the car right, the whole paint job is gonna look like ***. When you paint your own car, you're gonna notice every little discrepancy just because you did it yourself and you're gonna feel like crap when you know that you could've made it look better with a little more prep.

one of my 7's is flat black and we painted the whole thing and sanded it in less than like 12 hrs.....it came out ok but im going to wet sand and add about another 5-6 cans of paint to hit cause its still showing through in a few spots.....my biggest recommendation is to sand very well use a tack cloth and light coats that follow the body lines.(also get paint with an ez-spray nozle or youll hate life after a while and so will your thumbs) i heard the random pattern was best to use but i tried it on the sunroof first and it looked like *** so the best way is to spray with out ever stopping while the can is facing the body or it will leave stripes and marks....needles to say i think the car looks badass and i can park it anywhere!!!

HAHAHA I spray painted mine. I setup a tarped room outside to keep crap out of the paint. Sanded the whole car, sprayed 2 coats of rattle can primer. then did 2 thin coats of ultra silver rattle can, and then one really thin coat of rattle can clear coat. It turned out pretty nice...If I were to do it again I would have done about 4 coats of Ultra silver and about 4 more of clear coat...But by then the price would have been equal to that of a MAACO job so ehh....whatever works...I'll try and get some pics up. It's all in the prep work. Tape off good, and sand and primer good. If nothing else just primer it. I actually put color on mine so my folks would complain about it not being painted...im taking an autobody repair and paint class this semester so im gonna redo it anyways.

haha this thead cracks me up...anyway...Does anyone know a good spray gun that will get a professional job? So it goes, all body prep, then prime, then base coat then clear? When i hear people talkning about painting the cars, i hear a whole bunch of crap that i never heard before...Is there chemicals that i have to put into the primer/base/clear? also what should i look for when buying the primer/base/clear?

Sorry that i ask 20k question. I just never painted a car before and like to know as much as possible

A fair gun will start about 200, that's what I payed for my Iowata. Most pros have several guns, each for a different paint, i.e. primer, base, clear. Best thing you can do is make friends with your local autobody paint supplier, mine has been a great help and has even come to my house and helped spray a car when when I was having trouble laying a decent coat. Ended up buying the same gun he brought with him.
