Speaker question
Alright, im looking to get rid of the nasty *** dry rotted speakers that are in my SA. I was wondering what the dimensions are for the front and rear ones. And I was also wanting to know what brands i should go with. I am not looking to make it a mobile stereo, i just want it to sound good and have a little bit of bass. Also im tired of the distorting.
And is there anything i should do to the wiring? the right side speakers arent working.

Did the same with my 80SA - bought Polks via Crutchfield
4.5" Fr, 6.5" rears. Only prob I had was if you buy fronts that have mechanicals (ie cones) extending much above the surface of the speaker (and don't they all ) then you will need to either CUT out a hole on the kick panel cover OR do what I did which was to use an FB (1981+) kick panel, whose factory speaker covers allow for the thicker/deeper speaker... THEN you will need to loosen your hood release handle and rotate it 45 degrees so it doesn't interfer with the cover....
Factory wiring should plug right on - if your right is dead, the actual speaker line is replaceable I believe, just follow it up to where it meets the dash sub-harness behind the glove box - check the connection there or run new wires to the speaker from there. If you are putting a replacement head unit in too, then you might as well just run direct btw speakers and head, ignore oem harness-

I just grabbed some 4" speakers at WalMart that didn't have any cones sticking out as 7aull mentioned and put them in with some minor wiring changes to the connectors on the end of the wires. The speakers are el cheapos but rated much higher than they ever put in back in 80. It sounds fine now, I can actually listen to the stereo while cruising around watching Jeezus shoot flames out his exhaust :-)
Didn't do the rears, no stock wiring for them and didn't want to pull the stereo to figure out how to get it wired up.
I don't ride in the car to listen to music, unless its the exhaust kind.
You comin' to the next meet right? My SA gets lonely, although bad_83 brought out his ole SA which was fun.

Theres no amps in an SA, just a head unit with a radio and cassette, usually Clarion. Thats for stock, not sure what wip80 has though. Probably bad wire, pulled loose or shorted.

Actually, with the upgraded sound system as on the GSL and GSL-SE (the one with the huge Equalizer below the radio), the OEM system had a small Clarion Amp mounted (if I recall) under the driver side seat. The original system is quite adequate, if you still listen to cassettes tapes.

Thanks guys, I am going tomorrow to look for some speakers. I am not sure if I want to get a nice name brand or just some cheap ones. Any suggestions? I am going to keep the stock radio for now.

a single bazooka tube in the back for bass would do great... strap it down with the straps that come with it or build a wine rack for it... i saw an install david88vert did with three bazookas on a wine rack and it was awsome lookin!!!

My 83 has an amp under the driver's seat and another one in the driver's side bin. My speakers are 4" in the front and 5.25" in the back. I have the original 1982 clarion am/fm radio (out of the donor car) but have yet to figure out how to hook it up. LOL another project, another day.
