TBI could be tough since its speed density type,but anything is possible.

If you get an SE,Id just stick to the stock EFI,especially if your already comfortable working on it.Being metered air type,its responds to mods well and theres plenty of info here to keep it all working right.Only thing its really lacking is a proper code/diagnostics system.That didnt arrive on the RX-7 till the S5 in 89'.

It sucks I get 12mpg and i drive at least 80 miles a day for work. some days up to 150 miles. But it handels well and the turbo is fun as hell...

DD mine but i only live a block from work....but i waste gas cuz i leave 15mins early 2 get 2 work and get home 15 mins after i get off just 2 get her warmed up. the only thing i can see that has been replaceed is the alt. o yeah and the PO must have nailed an animal and put a nice hairline crack in the fmoc (SE) but that get fixored for 20 bucks for a almost perfect 2nd gen fmoc

Mine '79 RX-7 is a daily driver. I needed new wheels.
Now I'm saving up to afford new ones.
Want to get 15 x 7 Rewinds with zero offset.

my 82S is a beautiful DD. almost completely stock. handles like a dream and fires right up every time. only left me stranded when the factory starter went out. still had the mazda stickers on the starter too

Mine is a DD only issue I have is having to wake up early every day to start ti and wasting morre gas than normal by letting it run to warm up,other than that normal wear and tear exept for the issue I just resolved..U joints.

I've been driving a beater 1982 GSL ( for sale for parts in canadian forums: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=612245)

as my DD for 3 years

even witha blown apex or side seal teh car starts in -20 celcius with very little drama.

I've just got one with 106k on the clock as my DD, with an FD for the weekend. Only do 20 miles per day. Looking at swapping to LPG to reduce running costs (petrol $7.58/gallon in UK). Haven't looked back, lots of little niggly jobs to fix and it needs new bushes throughout.

just don't try to do crazy work on it and you're good to go. Used mine as DD for 2 years, never was a problem.

My SA was a daily driver for 7 years, never left me stranded once. I also raced it fairly often, and it saw 7k everyday. I loved that car, and had the time of my life driving it. Now I am in the process of building a worthy succesor.

Well, I have a Golf that I allegedly bought so that I wouldn't have to subject my RX-7 to another salt-ridden winter. That's kind of closing the barn door after the horses all ran off, but the Golf has good heat, too.

I've been driving the RX-7 now that the weather is cold, because of the lack of available CHEAP parts for VWs. One fuel pump was $110. The main fuel pump (two pumps!) was $250. If I can't find a new fuel reservoir (holds the main pump) used, then I will need to shell out $150 for a new one. Combine that with other recent repairs (ball joints, wheel cylinders, a couple ECUs) and I have spent more on remedial maintenance on the Golf in the past three months than I have on the RX-7 in the past THREE YEARS.

And I bought the Golf from a customer who had religiously maintained it *at our shop*, too, so it's not like it is some POS. It's actually a very nice example of the A2 chassis... when it runs.

The Mazda is the Energizer Bunny. It just keeps going, and going, and going...

You think the VW is bad, try and old Saab turbo... Beautiful cars on the highway, the 9K turbo think's it's a whole lot more car that it has any right to, but yet again, when it runs..

Well, thers is one slight problem with using the 7 as a daily driver that I am running into right now-

The car was fine, but naturally I have the need to tinker, to make it better. So I get a 2nd gen ignition coil from a guy to throw it in the car. I play with it today but in the final touch to complete the installation I drop the little nut that connects the positive lead to the coil. My car is parked over grass, that nut will never be found. Naturally, the only auto parts store open past 6 on a sunday doesn't have the correct size. So I can't move my car because I dropped a nut. Which I wouldn't have done if the RX-7 didn't make me tinker with it.

It's good to have two cars sometimes.

Mine did just that....Some idiot took out the driver's side fender and headlight and bent the front panel between the headlights...I think it was a truck. I was visiting Ft Bragg and someone hit and ran her in a parking lot. I cried...I had to drive 50 miles with no fender on her to get another one. I used to drive my 7 everywhere. 2 weeks previous I finally found the one part on the car that kept the car from driving straight and 2 weeks later she blew an apex seal. That's what I get for buying a motor I knew nothing about. This time I bought an entire car for parts and I drove her as much as I could for 2 years. Now the 83 is back on the road thanks to the organ donor and she will be a DD when I don't have to carry more than one child with me. Speaking of which...I thought I read somewhere that there is a very small back seat available for the 83. Does anyone know anything about that? My youngest child is small and that would be perfect because my older one will be driving himself around in the next few years.

I keep hearing that about the gas mileage. I seem to get really good mileage out of mine. That was the whole reason for putting her back into service at this time. I have an 87 Camaro RS that gets about 18mpg, a 94 Jeep Cherokee that gets about 16mpg, and a 1978 F150 supercab with a 351/400 modified with a broken heat riser...let's say about 7mpg. The last motor I had in the 83 RX7 was and 84 12A. She got about 30mpg or better coming back from Ft. Bragg on that fateful trip. I haven't really checked the consumption on the 82 motor that I just put into the 83, but I'm sure it beats all my other rides...

The only issue in the world because of lack of parts. Something breaks and your driving on a trip, you better have money to stay in a hotel and order the part from autozone.....

The stated EPA mileage estimates are not that bad really. I've bested the sticker mileage on every car I've ever had, it's an art. From reading and talking to people, I think that the rotary must loose MPG rapidly and dramatically when you start to modify it and drive it hard. Stock it shouldn't be that bad if you drive it reasonably.
This is from reading and talking and gathering experiences from people mind you.

Still going to be a bummer in a way, I've never had anything since my last American car (78 Lincoln) that got less than 25mpg average. I keep meticulous mileage records, think excel spreadsheets and many hundreds of thousands of miles worth of glove box notepads. It's a diesel driver thing.
The Scirocco with a fairly stock 1.8L 8v motor get's 32 on average, bout 35 holding 70 on the interstate.

Mine has been my dd for the last year (85). Blew a coolant seal on my first 12a put in a new one with about 70k and love it. I have a quick change oil drain plug and can change the oil in less than 10 mins... whenever the oil changes color I change the oil. She is reliable runs smooth and is fun to drive. I have a 96 Maxima & a 94 Q45, and if I didnt have kids... I'de always be in the 7.

Ive been driving my rx-7 every day for the past 4 years. In the pouring rain, snow everything. It's not the car, it's the driver and the preperations. Gratned I live 10 mins from my school and my school is 10 min from my job.

For the first 2 and 1/2 years I had a full BP. Now I have a huge SP making the same mph as the BP (only a tad bit more). I don't care much bout mpg, It's the price you have to pay for driving a sports car, that and no cup holders.
