So now that I've re-gained most of my hearing...
So my 24 year old exhaust finally gave out the other day... The connecting pipe was long ago broken in front of the muffler and had fallen off. Two days ago I'm driving home from work and my cat starts dragging, so I made it to my buddy's shop and cut it off (including the pre-cat!) Now for a word of advice -- when you read that a rotary engine is extremly loud w/o exhaust, believe it. I made it home that night and had to drive it to work the next morning. By the time i got there (30 miles) my employee said that I was talking pretty loud, and I had a headache for most of the day! I've got the racing beat dual-path setup coming, but for now the damn thing is undrivable w/o earplugs. Thank god the weather is getting nicer so I can drive the bike...
It sounds pretty badd-*** with no exhaust tho, especially around 4-6k. Backfires like a ****!

same here... i got my manifold heat shield out.. all i got to do is unbolt the manifolt.. push it to the side and bam no exhaust. i think its that simple anyways... but when you take off the manifold dont you have to replace the gasket?

It depends on how it looks, It should be made out of a stainless steel gasket.
I got a video of mine running running open ports. The video does not do it justice for how loud it really is!

So I got tired of waiting for racing beat to even charge my card (or send me tracking info) and decided to fab up some exhaust. I ended up using 2" pipe left over from a trampoline frame (galvanized), fabbed up a diverter (dual inlet muffler on my '82) and I can hear again! Took me about 5 hours last friday using my brother's mig, and I managed to do all the welding myself and ended up with minimal leaks. We used a torch to put 2 bends in the pipe, and it fits pretty well. Its still probably loud enough to get a ticket, but my teeth don't vibrate at 65 anymore and i can hear my stereo. Total cost? $0!!

pics coming soon! gonna wash/wax the whole car tonight... i'm wicked proud of it cuz i have no welding skills! The diverter was the hardest part because i cut it w/ a hacksaw and had to bridge a pretty good gap between the two pipes. Thankfully my bro's got all the handy tools :-) He's into chopping bikes and stuff, awesome stuff for a kid. http://customcycles.bravehost.com if you wanna check out the shop.

anything under around 40 mph was slightly tolerable for about 10 minutes. other than that say goodby to your hearing! well with no manifold and the backfiring... bad thoughts!
