not really likely that any mice or anything have gotten in. i've been daily driving the car for a while now, and just out of the blue it started smelling like rotten eggs. the smell of a dead cat, for sure. unless my pre silencer section also has cat like material in it, then i duno.
about the fuel mileage- i duno. nothing really too noticable...

the smell of rotten egg is given off when there is unburened fuel left after the power stroke of the engine but you usually get it if you are running rich and still have a cat, you get that rotten egg smell but if you dont have a cat i dont know why is doing that, you might still get the smell if you dont have a cat, or if you are feeding it burritos!

Stop sitting on the carb. That pleasure stud in the middle starts to hurt if the engine shakes too much.
I bet the smell is greatly reduced when driving. I've had that occur on an older thermal reactor type of carb, which was set rich at the factory. Tune your idle mixture. That should reduce the smell. If it's still too smelly for you, learn to love it, or install a direct fire ignition system.
