Angry Smokey start up.

When i start up my Rx7 it smokes pretty bad and coughs smoke out the exhaust after she warms up it idles fine and no smoke so is this just the way the rotary engine is because it makes alot of smoke for it just to be the way the rotary is. Its kinda embarrasing to start it up and cloud the neighbor hood. is something wrong new exhaust or what?

I don't know what entails your 'new exhaust', but sounds just like my car, and no, it's not normal for a rotary.

The cold-start smoke is due to aging oil control seals on each side of both rotors - this allows oil to sneak past the rubber O-rings and past the side-seals and into the combustion chamber. As your engine warms up, the rotors expand, the seals form a better barrier to the oil, and then the smoke stops.

Unfortunately, the only way to fix this is to rebuild the engine with new seals. In the meantime, your engine is getting a whole bunch more lubrication than it's ever seen and I actually saw my mileage go UP (from 15mpg to 17-18mpg on average). The downside is that your catalytic converter is gradually clogging up with the oil and carbon that the engine is ejecting and can't burn.

As we get into summer, it will be less noticable (warmer air temperature and faster warm-up cycle), but will still be there. My engine is original w/175k miles, so if you're anywhere near that, you may be able to expect the same.
