Smoke and bad running

I know somewhere I seen this before but I havent found it in searching the forum So if anyone can tell me what to look for I will.

My 81 was running fine. it was low on gas so I went to the Exxon a few miles away and put 10 bucks in. I started the car and got a block and it started running really bad and shutting off. I made it to the Walmart parking lot about 3 more blocks where it shut off. It will start now but its smoking really badly light grey smoke. What am I into with this problem??

thanks in advance

Mike

You didn't happen to accidentally fill it with deisel, did you? Pull out your plugs and check them for carbon deposits.

Get the diesel drained out and put in unleaded gasoline.

Also, how did you manage to the diesel filler nozzle to fit in the gasoline receptical on the "Gas tank" Thats the big question I am wondering?

Donno went to the pump, put card in. took hose on the right ( what I thought was 87) stuck it in the hole and squeezed 10 dollars (3.5) gal into it. Why it went in only those that have used it would know I guess. never ran diesel until today. I would laugh but I live in an apartment and have no place in which to work on it or a way to get it to start so I guess its now a paper weight unless somehow adding the rest of the tank with real gas will get it going enough to take a few miles to where I can drain the tank

If it's only 3.5 gallons the hell with the neighbors. Just get a 5-gallon bucket and a small one or two-quart plastic icecream pail or other suitable container. Disconnect the main fuel line going into the carb. It enters from just above the transmission on the drivers' side and into the left rear part of the carb and is the larger diameter of two hoses going in there. The smaller one is the fuel return line.

Now place the end of this hose into the ice cream pail and turn the ignition switch to the "on" position. (Not the "start" position). This powers up the fuel pump and you'll now have fuel pouring into the icecream bucket. once this is nearly full, turn ignition to "off", dump the contents of the icecream bucket into the 5-gallon pail, and repeat this process until the tank is empty. Then dump the contents of the 5-gallon pail into your land lord's flower bed.

Now put the proper 87-octane fuel into the tank (higher octane is a waste of money and doesn't light off as readily as lower-octane fuel does) and try to start the car. If it starts it will likely run rough for a few minutes before smoothing out. If it does not start you might want to try squirting a few shots of cold-starting-assist fluid into the carb. Good luck with this, and realize that we're laughing at you and may not let you live this little gaff down any time soon.

Yer welcome. BTW, I almost forgot: after you've drained the tank there will still be some deisel in the fuel lines that the pump couldn't push out without a supply of incoming fuel. To get rid of this, put the good fuel in the tank and then pump about a pint more fuel though the lines using the above-mentioned procedure. This will replace the deisel in the lines with good fuel and your car will run smooth sooner.

I do say, we tend to be a bunch with odd problems. Blame the MMO on your deisel problems.
