Shut off while driving, will not restart.

So about two weeks ago, after a 80 mile drive my 80' started making nosies somwere near the flywheel. Not having anything else to drive I drove it from work and home everyday but that was it, 2 miles round trip,. Then after a week the sound got much worst. At this point i was driving around like a grandma bc it got really bad at 2400 rpm. Then today i was driving to work and she just died, doing 40mph just died. I tried kicking the clutch to restart her but nothing, just locked up the tires. So i push her the rest of the way to work. After work i came out and started working on her. Set a battery charger up and tried just starting it, it turned very slowly so i turned the key back but it kept turing for some reason. So i turned the key on the off again and it stoped. Then i looked and the starter was smoking, so i parked and left it there for the night. Now i am complely stumped on this one.

Scroll to the bottom of the screen. Since I changed your thread title to reflect what the problem is there are now related threads on the subject.

For your starter to get hot and smoke like that I would guess there's a lot of resistance turning your engine over. If you can't turn it by hand I would think it has siezed for some reason like dropping a seal.

Doesn't sound good though. I think Jeff20B has guessed right.

A broken seal usually doesn't lead to a locked up engine - just a lot of damage to the rotor and housing. A spun bearing can seriously slow down an engine, but it can usually still be moved with a big screwdriver in the flywheel teeth. Still enough to lock up the tires though.

One of the only things that can totally stop an engine is a serious mechanical failure such as a broken stationary gear where a chunk breaks off and jambs inside the rotor, but even then there can be a little bit of movement. I suppose a rotor that jumps a tooth can also completely lock an engine, but jumping a tooth is pretty rare.

Any oil pressure being registered before it failed?
Not that the stock gauges are to be trusted, but it sounds like the engine was run into the ground without any/much oil pressure.Friction takes over and soon the bearings, side plates and seals are just ground up, and it seizes.

Ah......an 80.....no oil pressure gauge, but does the oil idiot light at least work when the engine is off?

Bad connection at the starter smoking due to excessive use. Clean up the connections, then find out why the motor quit in the first place.

Check for spark and fuel, then go from there. Could be a bad ignitor or fusible link...
