Should Manntis Change his Hood for the GSL-SE Airbox
like the title says...Should Manntis Change his Hood for the GSL-SE Airbox
for those of you who dont kn ow what this is here is a quote from manntis him self
"I wanted to ensure these would fit both models. While it's awesome for the 12A models, unfortunately the 1/4" drop of the vent touches the right rear corner of the GSL_SE airbox, preventing the hood from fully closing. We're re-molding the vents to rake back a bit more, thereby offering both larger openings and greater clearance."
and he is debating wether or not he should change his wonderful design to accomidate the GSL-SE

Tennis, anyone
he has to change it. for it to fit his car along with the others. he's going all-out
so that it fits all 1st gens and bolts right up the first time with no trimming or fussing. it's just a small set-back. are you moving or re-sizing the vent(s) or both ?

Between my brother Jimmy and I we have 3 GSL-SE's.....One in the process of a TII swap (mine) and the other a modded N/A (His) and other for future plans... Chances are that if you intend to buy the hood which is for performance reasons you wont have a airbox. Removing the Airbox is the First thing i see on every -SE. Its like every other performance mod, you gain in some areas and loose in otheres. Just think, Many people have Racing beat exhaust which does not have any cats in mind, People may need them, but are willing to give it up for the performance gains, otherwise they wont buy it. One must think, how many of the people with the stock airbox acutally are going to buy this hood, chances are if they havent changed the airbox, they havent done too much to the car to require a vented hood either. Granted some people may prefer the box and be quite modified, i still think leave the hood as is and i will be planning to place my order once i can.

i sure wouldn't mind having it sooner cause i don't have an SE.. but i respect him for wanting to make sure it's perfect.. having a product that you don't have to say BUT..... this and BUT.... that is way better imho.

This is the change, in diagram form. This change will allow a more universal fit, clearing most strut tower bars and not forcing you to change out your airbox or other neccessary alterations.
My goal is to make modular parts, whereby you can bolt on just one without having to buy another thing, or get the full meal deal, or any combination in between.

no offence to everyone, but not changing the hood is very very stupid on the creators part. By not making that minor change to the hood he is losing a good 20% of his customers. with the mild modification it will put the product behidna few days at most, cost the same, do the same job, look the same, and he will sell more of them. Its just common sence to change them so they are universal rather than making a 2nd one or not even making a 2nd one.

with under 500 you pull 150 hp..... (12A)
a stock -se has 135 hp..... There are a few FREE mods that can be done to an SE motor to get it close to 150 hp.
Note: Throttle body mod
Port the manifolds
remove cat
remove air pump
Bump the timing
*remove A/C -never works anyway

Se's are also 300 lbs heavier. Plus, why does everyone always say the suspension is better? Its the same, it uses the same macphearson fronts, and live axle rear with the shitty 4 link and watts. It uses the same shocks/struts/springs/bushings etc as the 12a cars. The brakes are better, as is the lug pattern and diff ratio, but beyond that I see nothing better about it. I'm glad to see i'm not the only one on this board who is unimpressed by the GSL-SE. I'll take my S anyday of the week. I'm not trying to start a flame war, and a SE is still a first gen, so its better than many cars, I just don't see why everyone puts them up on a pedastal and says they're so much better...

SE's aren't that bad. it's not like i'm leaving my SE stock anyways. so what's the big deal??
300lbs.? np, i've gutted junk crap in the car already
carb superior over FI?? riiiiiiight.

Well,
my vote is to let Mantis have the maximum payback on his investment; therefore, the more models it can fit, the more potential for sales. He deserves the max on his investment in doing the design and development AND bringing it to market for us!
It appears to me that the "Mantis" hood is going to be HOT. I'd bet that it will be as much as a novelty and associated with the first gen as the Marriah body parts.
I plan to have one for my '81 GS along with a Marriah Mode 4 front bumper. My new paint is waiting for this new hood!

I believe the GSL_SE has stiffer springs and thicker front and rear swaybars. IIRC Sport Compact Car went to great lengths to swap in a GSL-SE into Dave Coleman's project FB.
Thanks for all the input, both positive and constructive criticism. I'm most proud of the parts you can't see - the beefy hinge and latch mountpoints that will let anyone bolt one of these hoods onto the car for street use.
