Should I sell my 85 GSL SE?

I know you all hear this all the time but I am at a loss. there are so many reasons why I want to keep the car. The problem is that I have no time! I fear that the car will just sit forever and ever and that would be a true shame!

I have $5000 set aside for her but in checking around its going to cost me 3-4K to get the engine done and that only leaves me about a grand (budgeted) for the rest. I just dont have time to do it myself. (i wish I could)

Further the people I talk to say it will take 3-4 months to finish?!?!

I have really considered selling for the past week and I never realized how attached I am to the rex. Having said that, I realize that the ultimate decision will be made by the value of the car as she sits and what I can get for her.

I legitimately would like to get an idea of what it would bring if I decide to sell.

1 owner (bought new)
199000 miles
Needs engine rebuild (rear apex seal blew)
Have all,..and I do mean ALL of the books, records, receipts, window stiker,...everything.

If you sell it, you can never have another that you can proudly claim as having been owned by no one else.
I truly wish I could say I bought mine new, as I really wanted one back then, but as a high school student, I simply could not afford one.

thats true,
however, I already own 3 cars and would really like to buy another new car. (warranty) I have been looking at the Rx8, havent driven one yet. anyway Cant have 4 cars, that just doesnt make sense.
I truly want to fix this one up:
no rust (anywhere!)
Like new Eagle GT+4 tires
Interior is in excellent condition
exterior is great
never wrecked

the only things it needs are:
rebuild of corse
passenger side molding
mazda emblem on back (part of the "M" is missing)

in looking at the asking prices in the sell section, it doesnt seem that they bring too much, especially not running. However I dont know if the compensationg factors mine holds makes a difference.

HOW ABOUT THIS DEAL

If someone can refer me to a trusted rotary mechanic ( not some greedy hack like most of the people i have talked to) that has the facilities to properly fix my car. Ill buy the engine and all needed parts. they do the removal and reinstallation in a resonable time frame, at a resonable price. Ill pay a $50 finders fee upon agreement for that individual to do the work.

Philadelphia area

seriously

I think the rear apex seal blew out, she just quit on me one VERY RAINY day and never restarted. I tried the MMO thing, but no avail. I had a rebuild done in 96, about 80000 miles before she laid down

I am sure you can find a cheap used motor around . Have you tryed ebay? I bought a 12A for my rust bucket(if you only knew) from there last year and its been running good since i paid a "street machanik" to put it in. It only cost me 30 buks + 'medical expenses' that raised the grand total to $50 buks.

What ever you do don't give up on her. She deserves a good home and some TLC

I just had my SE engine rebuilt. Did you do a compression check?? Simple test, pull one front plug and crank, should get 3 solid pops, then do the rear and check as well.

well theres a general mechanic in trenton, nj who races rx3's all the time...he doesn't specialize in rotary only because he makes more money with piston engined cars but he knows all about rotaries...let me know if you want his number...if you don't mind far away then there's www.rx7world.com ...he's a good guy and knows EVERYTHING there is to know on rebuilding 7's 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen...only thing is he's all the way in SC...he does have spare engines he can rebuild for you and when its ready you can tow your 7 down and install the engine there and drive home...

he's where i got my 7 from...check out this thread...
