should i rebuilt my engine?

i have a 84 GSL se
with 99K miles on it
i feel like the car is still fast
but i can not go fast enought in the first gear
is that the transmission problem?
if i want to rebuilt the engine
how much $$ will it cost me?

first of all, don't hit the button more than once!!!!!!!
second of all, you should give the car to me... sounds like it would be too much effort to make fast

I can go 30 MPH at redline in first gear.

As stated, unless theres a problem dont try and fix it. You know, the old "If it aint broke, dont fix it" kinda thing.

Also, 99K miles is not much in the world of rotaries. My 85 GSL has over 230K miles and still runs on the original engine. Smokes a little on start up until warm because of a blown coolant seal, but other than that, shes fine. Actually, all of my 4 RX-7s have over 150K miles on their engines and still run fine. I hope that helps you some as well.

It has to do with gearing....

True you don't have a high top speed in 1st gear, but did you notice how fast it accelerates.

As you start moddifying your car you'll be able to go faster in each gear.

My car is in kph but when I first got it, first gear would take me to 20kph. Now first goes to about 50kph.

1st=50kph
2nd=90kph
3rd=125kph
4th=165kph
5th=unknown

Thats with the mods I have listed

20kph?

Isn't that *very roughly* 10 miles an hour? i.e., under 20 by a decent amount?

I worry for you if it only went that fast in first when you bought it... :-/

And I suppose I'm stupid, but I don't understand how modding a car makes it go faster in whatever gear unless you move the redline or change gear ratioes...
I'm assuming your redline is just significantly better with the mods you've listed?

Thanks for informing the uninformed (both sf@rx7 and myself =)

You have to realize this is a 20 year old car, things aren't going to move and slide perfectly. I've never met an FB driver that says their shifter feels like butter. The only reason the car warming up would have anything to do with the transmission is the gear oil's viscosity, when it is cold, the gear oil will be thicker than it is when hot.

Yeah, changing the oil to a good synthetic such as Red Line or something will probably help you out a lot. Mine is hard to shift when cold also, but I havent put anything other than just plain old gear oil in there. Also, as he said, 20 year old synchros dont exactly work as well as we would like them too .

man you all are free to come play and test my trani in my gsl-se. it shifts LIKE BUTTER. it's awsome. never had a rebuild, just good up-keep from previous owner. i donno about where i read it but i remember reading it when i was considering rebuilding my old engine(i ended up doin a swap to an 88 13b). it said a rotory life span is about 150k b4 stuff happens to it. a rebuild is about 100k. doin stuff like porting will drop the life span. i also rememebr reading that a full bridge port will last about 60k b4 it needs help. but good matnance always improoves these numbers. and being the good car geeks we are. we always do schedualed tune up. some monthly, some weekly, and in my case almost daily.

i agree don't fix it unless it's broke. keep an eye on it though and maybe set a little $$ aside in a car fund just incase.
