Should i make the switch? =)
a quick catch up for those that don't know me...
i have been building rx7's for a good long time now... started with the FB's went thru a few turbo 12a setups, then the V8 swap (yes i was all but banned on here)... then i parked it and built an TII FC. here is where i stand right now..
i do miss the FB, i still have the one with the 350sbc in it but was thinking of pulling it out and putting my TII motor in it. then slapping a stock motor back in the FC.
here's some pics to help:
400+rwhp bridgeport 13B, 9.4:1 comp rotors, Blow-thru, 70mm turbo,etc...
yea, the headlights are broke
Here is the FB, semi-torn down...
should i bother? think the weight will make THAT big of a difference? i know the fc has mid 11's in it on the pump gas tune it's at right now. i was hoping maybe that could throw me to a high 10 in the FB
Should i do it?????

It's a MP T70 = 69.5mm inducer/ 93mm exducer Q-trim 1.0 hotside 3.5 outlet. CSU built 750cfm double pumper, CSU carb hat, Racing Beat intake manifold, 12a Distributor *not locked*, HKS log exhaust manifold, 1/2" spacer between mani and turbo just to give more room, 3.5" downpipe to corksport 80mm cat-back, RICE racing Pre-turbo water injection, Leading ignition ONLY fired off stock coil w/ MSD 6a... ummm MR pulleys, ACT lite flywheel/ HD clutch kit... maybe other stuff? haha
Engine: S4 TII irons, my own large streetport w/ bdc eyebrows, opened up the exhaust ports a little early and closed them slightly later with a good widening, 9.4:1 rotors, RA super seals w/ stock mazda springs, FD opr's, RX8 stationary gears, blah blah blah

How do you like the MP T70? I'm still looking around for a turbo for my TII swap and I am a newb when it comes to them. Your build is quite similar to my plans, S4 TII, possible, hell, probable, 1/2 bp and a hp goal near 400. Next question would be what rpm does boost start to come on, where does it hit full boost, and what psi are you running?
Breaking 12.5 would satisfy my goals, for now, lol. 11's would be sweet. Then I might have to get serious with the REPU someday.
1st gen looks very clean, btw., perfect look for a sleeper.

you just want to run 12's???? then i would just do a streetport and a 60-1.
i can't be a good comparison because i honestly think the carb setup is helping my spool. i get 10psi @ 1/4 throttle in any gear except 1st. i almost cruise in boost... i am only running 14.5 psi right now and i hit that between 4k - 4500 rpms in 3rd. this turbo with the s4 n/a rotors is unbelievably streetable. i get up to speed very fast barely getting on the throttle in this heavy FC passing traffic on the highway is a matter of staying in 5th gear and just easing on the throttle. no lean spots with the carb and i cruise at 14:1 afr's
yea with the v8 in the fb it was so quiet nobody had a clue what hit them! i can't lie, it was stupid fun but i just missed the top end power band. the GT42R never got it's full chance on the v8 as i knew that was just way too much for the car.
the main thing holding me back from putting the bridge 13b in the fb is i really don't think i want to use the front cover mount method. i'm afraid there will be too little support in the rear of the engine and that may cause issues.... i don't have much time to fab stuff up this summer. gotta go back to engineering classes in the fall
oh and i painted the fb myself... you can find some progress pics in that "budget paint job" thread haha

yea i'm still debating it all in my head... the thing i do love about the FC the motor is in is that it plants the power soooo well! i may just have to build a bridgeport 12a turbo for the FB

Zac,
First off your FB is beautiful seeing it in person I was very impressed with V8 even before the turbo. I saw it last summer at an RX-7 meeting down there. I was with your buddy running the 12a turbo.
Once I move back down to Charlotte I am going to have you build my turbo motor.
I would stick the FC motor in the FB. They are just more fun. Throw a stockish motor in FC and daily drive it.

thank you much! i put a lot of work in to that car, it's nice to hear some appreciation
i'm just looking at how difficult the transmission mount and driveshaft will be. everything else should be cake... except for some re-enforcement where the stock motor mounts are on the block.

I would leave the fc alone since it is done and working well. But I would remove the 350 from the FB and build a turbo 12a or a turbo 13b to put in it.
Then you would have two sweet *** car that are rotary power and move.
I am planning out an S5 13bT in my 79sa or my 85 gslse. Still have not decided on what car as the gsl-se is about done and well the SA needs everything.
I just lack the front cover being built to hold the S5 OMP, turbo drain, then the drive shaft, and just to figure out how to trigger the S% ECU from the SA or from the GSL-SE. Seeing this stuff makes me want to get on it and get it done.

i hear ya man, you pretty much have said what all my local buddies here keep saying. the ones that have ridden in the car don't understand why i would want to go any faster hahahaha. i haven't even touched the efficiency range of this turbo yet i dunno, i have two 12a's sitting in the garage ready for a build. might have to build a new turbo kit and see what i can get out of the ol' motor
i'll make my mind up by the weekend, 'cause i could just as easily throw together a stock port build and use the stock injection setup for the TII to be a daily. Two fast cars would be fun tho AHHHHHHHHHH! hahahaha decisions!

I don't mean to go off topic but this has the gears in my head turning as well. Is there an orange/amber transluscent paint as well? Anyway both cars look great. You might have to purchase another FB to satisfy your needs LOL. I say drop the Turbo II in the FB and build the REW for the FC, or keep the FC the way it is and put the REW in the FB LOL. I know you'll enjoy whatever decision you make. Good luck!

Zac.........dude. That's a killer blowthrough in that TII. I think if I had to make that chioce your facing, I would leave the TII alone the way it is. Build you a 1/2 bridge 12A, with a nice size turbo, blowthrough (of coarse), and leave that 1rst gen light as a feather. If you are worried about the torsional stress on the first gen, go with solid engine mounts and we can make a rear of engine sub frame brace. I have had the subframe brace idea in my head for a while. So.......... you bringing that TII up this weekend? BTW, I think you'll like the 83 12AT better now with a fresh coat of paint.

hahaha did that!
i abandoned the project tho after getting the FC. i was having traction issues going down the track as it was due to so much torque!!! hahaha
which is making me think i should probably just do a turbo 12a in the fb so it's got even less torque haha but i dunno. i'm SO TORN!
is the weight that much of a difference between the FC and FB?
