I had a set up like this in my 82, and not have the same thing in my 90. Just get a Miata short THROW shifter, not SHORT shifter. Should drop in with maybe a little shaving of the lower nylon bushing, no trick to it. On the 82 I just used a stock S5 shift ****, on my 90 I have a 5 speed RX-8 ****, but if you get a Miata shifter, any 89 and up **** made for a Mazda will fit.
PS- You can get the RX-8 5 speed **** from Rotary Performance for like 90 bux. Worth it.
Good Luck
