semi-urgent: mating s4 engine and clutch to gsl-se transmission

will the S4 engine mate up to a gsl-se transmission w/o any modification? i have a '86 engine with '86 style clutch that i'm having problems mating to the GSL-SE transmission.

i'm either just not getting them to line up right or it won't fit. trying to determine which one it is.

so any of you FC engine'd FB folks have any advice?

thanks in advance

Dude. They're the same transmission and same clutch.

All N/A trannies will slide right up to all N/A engine/cluch combos, with ONE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION: The little vent thingie on the left side of the -SE trans can interfere with the beehive's oil line on a '83-85 12A. Solution: remove the vent or toss that freakin' beehive and get an oil cooler.

can't get the flywheel to slide onto the transmission input shaft. like i said, i could just be not lining it up exactly... my engine hoist is a winch hanging from the rafters.

/edit: my gsl-se came with the front-mount oil cooler. i don't have it or the radiator in the car right now to give me space to work.

Eh. Drop the tranny, put the engine in, install the trans afterwards.

That'll learn ya for removing the engine without the transmission!

Those plactic alignment tools aren't always accurate. I fought and fought with one this summer. Finally took an old input shaft and used it to line it up.

If the shifter housing is hitting the tranny tunnel, you need to tilt the engine back a little bit.

Last night I put the ceramic clutch out of my 2nd gen in my 12a. Of course this was on the bench, but it will work.

Did you do the shifter housing mod to bring the shifter back to the 1st gen position? The 2nd gen shifter sits farther back than the 1st gen?
