Question Selling w/out title, help/advice needed.

I bought property over a year ago that came w/ an '85 Rx7. It had been sitting here years, I don't think there ever was a transfer (didn't recognize names on title as property sellers). Property seller had started car often but it wasn't drivable. He gave me the keys & title, I bought manuals planning on getting it going for daughter. Never happened. But somewhere along renovating mess and clean-up we've lost key, title, minds, manuals, money,...I've looked everywhere and found none.

Now I've sold the car yesterday to guy from this BB and we need suggestions on best way to go about getting a new title.

I've heard there are salvage titles (?) and others who said vintage cars often have this happen & not too big an issue.

We're in MD, any advice/help much appreciated.

Check with your DMV, there are ways to aquire tittle to a car that has been abandoned on one's property. You may have to hold off on the sale until you can get a title in your name.

Was the title ever in your name? If so it shouldn't be a big deal to get another one. My brother lost the title to his truck and all he had to do was go to the DMV, or MVD, or secretary of state (whatever you have there in MD) and pay $15 and they sent him a new one. Took about two weeks. This was in Michigan though, so maybe they just make things way too easy. They even told us that if we had gone to one of the larger DMV's that they could print a new on off for us right there.

You also might want to post the question in the North East section of the forum so more MD members will see it.

I have no help... if it were an SA I could have given you a vin plate and title.

in my state... if you can still get in contact with the guy you purchased it from, you can have him sign a lost title form and give it to the new owner. new owner shows that to dmv pays like $25 and everything is peachy king. it has to be last registered owner to sign the form though

I just posted in a thread about this very subject.

If you end up needing an entirely new title like I did, this is the cheapest service I found:

2 previous property owners & first one has no idea who was on title or where he got the car (he's 60 yrs older than the car). It's apparently been sitting here awhile. Seems like if after running VIN# & it hasn't been stolen, there would be a simple process on a 21 year old vehicle. Imagine DMV isn't going to give us any short cutting ideas but will give it a shot.
Thanks all
