Angry secondaries won't open

I have tried everything Ican think of and have looked everywhere and tehy just won't open. I poured some MMO in tem so when driving, I'd know they'd open up by hte smoke. No luck. I took a screwdriver and pushed them open as they were stuck shut. I guess they guy never drove it hard. I checked every vacuum line and all hooked up. Any help with this? Also what is the thing on the drivers side of the motor with a cable running to the carb for? It wasn't hooked up and I pugged it in and it seems to give more fuel? Thanks!!

The motor you are talking about is the hot start motor. Watch it as someone cranks the car, it gives the car a bit of throttle.

Well the thing on the drivers side (cable) is probally the hot start assist.

The secondaries on a stock Nikki carb, are vacuum activated. On the passenger side of the car below the air cleaner. Theres a round looking piece. It has 4 screws, behind that is the diaphram and return spring. This is probally broken and leaking vacuum. Or the carb could need to be cleaned out really good. It might be stuck closed. Theres a lever on the front of the carb. That controls the secondaries. Hold the throttle down in the back, and try to move the lever in the front. If it moves freely. Id say replace the diaphram and spring... Otherwise you probally need to clean it up really good inside and out. Good luck...

On my junkyard carb the secondaries were frozen, too. You'll need to free them up if it turns out that diaphragm is ok.

First things first... the secondaries will not open unless the primaries are at least halfway open, or if the choke is on, so get a piece of wood or something and lodge the gas pedal all the way down.

Go back out to the carb, get a Phillips screwdriver and pull the secondary diaphragm cover off like Mike says and make sure the cover's not cracked, the gasket's not toen up, diapgragm's ok, etc. Feel underneath the diaphragm housing and you should feel a lever with a rod hooked to the bottom. If you can move the lever, you should be able to see the secondaries opening and closing. If it won't move, it's stuck. If it does move and the secondaries don't open then the linkage came off.

If they're just stuck, get your good friend PB Blaster (Liquid Schwartz! ) and soak the linkage and the throttle shaft (from the outside) and carefully try to get it working smoothly again. On mine it was the diaphragm's lever that was stuck, which is a bitch to unstick unless the carb is off the car.

If all that is in good working order, just make sure the diaphragm cover is put on correctly (there's a little passage at the top that needs aligned right) and the gasket is in good order and it SHOULD work.

Oh yeah... and make sure the secondaries CLOSE all the way, too, after you unstick them. (Ask me how I know )

And don't forget to un-block the throttle before you try to start the engine. (Ask me how I know. )

just for ***** and giggles i went out and opend the hood on the l.e. i found 2 things #1 the little screw "t" thinggy at the firewall on the carb was off, i have no idea what the hell this thing does but its spring loaded in the down postion, after rehooking it the foot pedal felt supper light to push to the floor. any body know what this thing is and does? #2 i pulled off my vac. diamphram and went to check it. it looks ok, no holes that i saw but there is gas or oil or something on the bottom of the dia. would this bee a sign of a prob.?

I beleive its the throttle return spring, its used for leverage to make things smoother on the carb. Like pedal pressure and stuff... Never was really sure, but when its off, it causes problems...

Dunno on the diaphram that could be anything on there...

Working now!

Ok, they are working now and teh car is fast but still needs more. Maybe I'm looking for the v-8 kick from the 4 barrel. I know my cat is plugged up as the muffler barley has any pressure of exhaust coming out of it at idle. I'm going to get a test pipe made and dump the cat. That should help the car out. Thanks for all the answers and help.
