Same year 12a different oil pump housings which should I use?

I pulled these off of 2 12a engines (both with bee hive) you can see the oil pump housings are different. Both will bolt on no problem, the cleaner one is the one I was going to use if there is no performance gain from using the other. (I know 1 pump still has the gear attached... thats not the difference I was refering to... its the shape of the housing...) If you know please tell me?

Also I cleaned the rotors and housings and just wanted to give a few shots of the parts I'm using for my 1st rebuild. The streetport cleaned gives me warm feelings...

any help appreciated... oohh and look at the nice condition of 1 of my needle bearings!!!!

Have you speced either pump for wear tolerences or measured the thickness of the rotor?

according to my rebuild video specs come after the cleaning... unless i'm mistaken... i used one of your old posts as the outline for the measurement tools I need (calipers & dial indicator) and i will be getting them this week. I have the feeler guages but i was curious about the pumps first...

The pumps are both in spec based upon the tests outlined on the dvd. Will check the rotors after I get my calipers.

Pull the main rotor out of both and see if they're the same height, i.e., 15 mm vs 17.5, iirc.

ooops you meant those rotors... I was trying to figure out why you would ask me to check the rotors? (I feel so stupid.)

I am at work now, I will check when I get home and post.

Trochoid... off the main topic but still on the topic... are these tools ok?

Micrometers

Dial Indicator magnetic base

I know they are not the most expensive but I think they will get the job done. Please let me know.

Use the one with the thicker housing and thicker rotor. Check for shaft slop and scoring.

Thanks Jeff there is a pretty big difference in size. Is the larger one from a newer gen?

Also.. I noticed there is a difference in oil pans also... the pic is of the one that came from my 75$ engine... it has ridges in it and my old one doesnt... which should I use?

It looks like the 75$ find was rebuilt with better parts, I also found the thicker corner seal springs in it.

Please let me know... Thanks...

Yep the posts on the bottom of this thread show that its a 13b oil pump. I'm going to pull the screws out of the e-shaft and see if they did the jet mod also....

Still havent been able to find the oil pan difference though?

It's not just a 13B oil pump. All 12As from '83-'85 had this larger oil pump, as did all 13Bs from the '80s (nitrided R5, RE-SI and GSL-SE). If someone tells you different, they're stupid.

The oil pan with the bumps in it is found on '83 and later engines. You'll also notice part of the upper rolled lip is missing. This is for center motor mounts on the EFI 13Bs and 6 port carbed 12As.

Thanks again... That means my old 12A that came with my 85 GSL was built from older parts (thats how I bought it). The only thing I am reusing from that engine are the irons because they are ported. Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can go some distance in the rebuild before any other questions.

Cheap tools are just that. But, if they are accurate and you only need them once, they may work fine.
