it's clearly an '83. It has the puuukey Series 2 instrument cluster, and the equally puuukey beehive oil cooler. '83 was the only year for both. It also means that he also has the non-rebuildable driveshaft *and* the small-bearing rearend. But the engine has the lightweight rotors, which are probably worth what he paid for the whole car.
note if you didn't get it: The beehive showed up in '83, *not* '84. Mazda did a lot of changes for the '83 model year, and a lot more for '84, so '83 is kind of a halfbreed year. Also seems to be one of the most common years. The '83 engine has the same lightweight rotors, beehive oil cooler, and 6-solenoid rack as the '84-85 engines, BUT the wiring harness goes off to the driver's side of the car instead of the passenger side as on the Series 3... easy way to tell in a junkyard.

Yeah, there was another thread on here recently discussing some differences in the funky '83s. Mazdatrix lists an '83 and an '83-and-a-half kinda thing. It's like Mazda decided to make some changes at the beginning of the '83 run, then again halfway through, then again at the beginning of the '84 run!
One of these days, someone is going to get un-lazy enough to compile a VERY detailed listing of all these changes through the 1st generation... Might be me, who knows. I'll have to get a lot of free time before that happens though
The question I have now is: How do I identify if the engine I have is an '83? I think only the second HALF of the '83 production year got the S3 oil cooler, so if I do have an '83 it would be from the first HALF. And did the whole year have light rotors?
Gah.. so confusing

2-83 isn't necessarily an early one.. I don't remember Mazdatrix' cut-off date for "83-and-a-half" but remember that many cars are produced the year before. For example, come summer's end I'll be able to buy an '06 mazda from the dealership, but it'll still be '05
But I don't know any of it for sure. I'll assume they all had beehives until I'm sure.
