SA mistaken for a Porsche
I posted this in Southwest to see what the locals thought. But this is a serious question. A few people have mistaken my car for a Porsche. Do you think so?
The picture was taken during the Toys for Tots! cruise on December 12, 2004. Credit goes to SlowWhiteS2K (Ryan) for taking the picture.
I believe someone referred to a Porsche 911 during the cruise, but I didn't recall seeing any Porsches or 911's. And my car is nowhere near a 911.
I don't have a rear shot of the car, but it does have a whale tail, and I think that's what throws people off.

I think it's your combination of the whale tail and your wheels. A lot of people relate that type of wheel design to Porsche. The chrome ring with the black inner looks a lot like a set of Porsche fuchs.

lots of people mistake the first gen for porches, i was called a ferrari once. My friend has a second gen and some called it a camaro. My other friend has a third gen and someone called it a corvette. 7's are always called other cars

My car has been officially called the "poor mans porsche" or "redneck porsche" by many people. Put a mild widebody on one of these with the front end in the pic above and you have a car that looks a lot like a 944.

A guy down my street collects and works on Datsuns. Hes got all kinds of 240's and 280's, parts cars and restories. When I got my RX-7 about 2 years ago, he came down the street and asked if I needed any parts, I could stop by. I was like 'Parts for what'. Hes like 'Datsun Parts'. I was like, 'I dont own any datsuns'. He then looked at the car and you could see the little 'Dumbass' light go on in his head. He then proceeded to make the comment most Datsun owners make - 'I switched to the datsun from an RX-7 because its faster.' My response, 'It isnt faster, you just have less paitence.'

My car has been called a slantnose before, along with a 911, 944, 914. Then, there is always the typical 240Z comments.
BTW, your car is gorgeous, man. The wheels, hood, paint, body kit, everything! It is all beautiful!

Definitely similar to the Porsche 924--- right down to the seats and instrument panel layout. When these cars were first introduced in 1978 (as a '79 model) the 924 had already been available for over a year. Parked side by side you could readily see that Mazda had taken many styling cues from Porsche. Either that or it was a very large coincidence.
The whole front end, the stance and glass hatch were along the same lines, and the instrument pod and stepped console extending downward from the dash were a novelty at that time and only common to those two cars. (although the *** end of the Porsche looked less refined than that of the RX7).
But the differences made the 7 a better car by anybody's standards, except maybe those of snobs who just had to have a car that said "PORSCHE" on it. The 7 was almost 2 seconds faster in the zero to 60 department, slightly better in handling, and you could buy two RX7s in 1979 for the price of one Porsche 924.

I've driven an FB, 924, fc, 944, FC Turbo, 944 Turbo...
I LOVED my GSL-SE.. it was a lot of fun, and felt great... if I had to make a rating I'd go in the following order:
FC Turbo
944 Turbo
GSL-SE
944 n/a (drove a 944S, regular 944s might not be as nice)
FC3S N/A
924N/A
Porsche makes damn nice cars, but so does mazda.. my GSL-SE was an awesome car, but my TurboTII is nicer (and a WHOLE lot faster)

Any car has some similarities with any other car, and every person has his own perceptions. But I saw much more resemblence with other cars than with the 924/944. The rear ends and hatches are very different. The RX-7's rear end and hatch profile is more similar to a TVR than a 924.
There are many cars with pointed noses and pop-up headlights. They all look vaguely similar in that respect, but the RX-7's chiseled nose is distinctive. I think it is much different from a 924, yet very similar to a Monica or Ferrari 365 GTB.
