SA dash vs FB dash

[QUOTE=rbf41182gt]SA!!
simplicity is the key- clean and no nonsense
actually, come to think of it... almost everything about the SA is better than the FB [QUOTE]
I support the view. The best Gen 1 was the 85 SA, it came without the complex FB dash. It also had all disc brakes, lsd, and 114 wheel lug spacing.

This looks like the dash from all the NZ, UK and Australian RX-7s, even the 85 SA after they put decent stereo speakers into it.
How was the FB different? Or are talking about the Instrument Panel or Centre Consule?

I don't like the HVAC controls in either. I like the FC's setup much better. Got *****, sliders, and buttons abound in the FB... Pick ONE style of control, not many.
Besides, the locations for the heat/cold and the fan speed **** are perfect for gauges...
I despise the fake leather grain and stitching all over the place...
I like the S2 gauge cluster better. I hate the S1/S2 round vents...
Still debating on the dash styles, leaning more towards the S3.

Well, I personally like the earlier FB style better, but that picture seems to be my EXACT old '85, even though I bet it's not from Topeka, Ks.... but even the swivel-out tray under the stereo was messed up in the same place.... makes me miss her...

Hey Phill, my white 84 GSL with the red interior is from Wichita, not Topeka, but not a bad guess. Here's a photo from the rear, I think you can make out the dealer's insignia, which is Wichita Mazda Ltd.

Here's a picture of the interior before I swapped out the velour seats for red leather, which I like a bit more:

I got the car last year with 84,000 miles on it, needed some repairs but it's in rare unmolested stock condition and the body is near perfect, something worth investing in. It's my daily driver now and it's a real pleasure to drive.
As you might also have guessed, I'm a fan of the stock look and that 84-85 dash layout is a classic, one of the defining features of the first gen (along with the pop up headlights, X wheels, wrap around taillights and pointy nose). I like the earlier dashes too, especially when they keep the original lay out.
In my opinion the fading and signs of wear just add to the classic, elegant look of these one-of-a-kind cars - why change it, no matter what year your 7 is? They must have been built well too, all the electronics, controls and sound systems have worked perfectly on all three of my GSLs, not something you see very often in twenty year cars.
Let's see some pictures of the earlier stock dash layouts!
