S4 NA 13B into an FB?

Yes, I searched.

So I've found an '84 local with a seized 12A for $300. Me and my buddy are looking for a cheap project and this sure seems like a fun candidate.

My question is this. Given the affordability and availability of the S4 NA motors, how difficult would it be to drop one in an FB? I've seen all the TII swap threads, and I'm wondering if anyone's done this swap. Another reason I'm interested in the S4 NA motor is the affordability of the megasquirts now for sale. If I could bolt up the motor, I would have a standalone for very cheap and be able to wire up a new harness.

So my main question is what exactly would I need, mechanically, to complete this swap? Thanks in advance!

from the stand point of physically doing it- not too hard- use the 12a front cover, a GSL-SE oil pan, modify a front 12a mount or get a racing beat 12a-13b mount. Exhuast system, could use a GSL-SE manifold I believe and bolt to a stock exhuast..I am uncertain if the 12a exhuast bolts to a 13b manifold. A GSL-SE oil cooler or a way to modify a S4 one to fit. You have to decide what route you want for fuel/intake- probably the most important thing to consider.

^^^ wat he said. im not sure about the megasquirt. the engine swap part shouldnt be a biggy like wacky said. you can butcher up the harness and run the s4 ecu or u can get a carb or you can get a stand alone system...not sure wat would be good for a megasquirt tho

I put a S4 engine in my SA.

Fit's nicely. NO problem getting it in. YOu do need the donor car for the ecu and wire. The wiring is a bit of a bitch but not all too hard with some patience, time, wiring diagrams, time, patience, wire cutters, time, patience.....

you get the picture.

but it really is pretty cheap. You use a GSL-SE oil pan. You can use a GSL-SE front engine mount bar that attaches to the front cover, or supposedly they can be modified to work.

also you need all the wiring and the ecu. Those are pretty easy to get at a junkyark.

All this talk about this swap makes me think I should go that route... I just got another gsl-se motor.

The one problem I did run inot with my SA was the fuel pump. I had put an intank pump in, but the pickup didn't quite work that well. I never was able to finish the car though. I should go back and strip it!

if you've already read the steps to bolt a T2 motor into an FB chassis, then you follow the same steps to bolt the 13B-E in there. the only differences i can readily think of are you don't have to drill the SE front cover and you dont' have to change the tranny - so less work right there. it's really not a big deal once you have all the parts you need before you're realdy to bolt it in.

as for what you plan to run the engine, i'm at a loss because i've never wired up a Megasquirt system. however, i think you'd better served if you get the one that does ignition as well as fuel so that you can employ the Gen II ignition system with your fuel injection.

good luck and keep us posted.

You will need the SE front cover, not the 12A one due to the S4 having 4 mop lines. Running the Megasquirt will eliminate the wiring changes usually associated with the TII swap, just adds a new set of things to wire up, along with sensor changes to match the MS.

SE exhaust should bolt up, don't forget the auxiliary port activation.

You should install an SE fuel tank and hard lines, but there are ways to work around that.

Thanks for the replies guys!

As for the megasquirt, I've already built one and know I can build another to run the both the ignition and fuel. I plan on bringing over the stock ignition from the S4.

So as I understand it, I would need:
1. The front cover from the 12A *Edit* SE front cover*.
2. GSL-SE sump.
3. GSL-SE mount.
4. S4 NA Longblock.
5. S4 NA ignition system.
6. Megasquirt ECU + custom harness.

How about the clutch/flywheel/counterweight? What do I need to bolt the motor to the tranny?

Again, I appreciate the help!

Use the S4 clutch, pp and flywheel. The flywheel is the critical part, it is matched to the engine, the clutch is the same from 83 on for the NAs.
