The cars aren't even roughly the same dimensions, not to mention competely different wiring and control systems throughout the car.
It could be done, but it would not by any means be 'easy.' An 11 on the difficulty scale.
Only prcatical way would be to swap out or custom-fab the entire power train and control system. Otherwise it'd be like trying to put the cockpit from a modern F-18 into a WWII Mustang; much of the stuff it is designed to measure and control isn't even there.

needless to say, if (or more likely when) i decide to put a Renesis in a Gen I, i'd rather sacrifice a little of the stock functions (and possibly smoothness in the powerband) and go with a standalone setup than go through the trouble of keeping the stock ECU or PCM or whatever.

stupid? no. it's definitely not the choice i would make though. hell, if anything, i'd be inclined to put my S3 dash into my Rx-8; but while i jest i'm also a little bit serious because i never got why the Rx-8 had to (1) be so complicated and (2) why with such a complicated car Mazda actually chose to take shortcuts in quality. bloody baffling ....

I heard a rumor that a few years back some company was selling a turnkey fuel/ignition computer, I wanna say HKS? They don't make it any more apparently. All rumor not confirmed I should snopes that **** first oh well

as for the rumor of the turnkey conversion, i must say i had not heard that one. however, i guess i also never had an interest in that topic, so i guess i shouldn't be surprised.

the RX8 has digital inputs for the cluster head unit and radio. basically it would be easier to make the cluster from scratch and the radio surround doesn't look quite right without the factory radio.. even if you got it to work every warning lamp would light up like a christmas tree and half the functions would not work.
then there's the fact you have a dash that looks totally out of place in the older cars, is likely too wide and definitely too deep. you can make anything work with enough patience and work but in this case... waste of time. you could do it if you basically gutted an RX8, installed the renesis and all the relevant onboard electronics to power everything, but why? the RX8 handles better, has 4 seats, has a higher resale value, etc, etc, etc.
good luck with it, you will need it.

Interior
I think the 84/85 rx7 has one of the cleanest dash designs off alot of cars even till now. Its aged well and it doesnt crack.
My restored interior looks great compared to some of the modern = ugly designs of some cars now.
