Runs, then dies....

Ok, I just bought an 80 RX7. It'll start up, run for about 5-10 seconds and then die. If you spray starting fluid into the carb while it's running it'll stay running until you stop. Without the starting fluid it'll die after a few seconds. any thoughts? I'm thinking maybe the fuel pump or pressure regulator?

I'm thinking you need to test things to determine the problem.

Certainly sounds fuel related. Carb, fuel pump, or clogged filter. Personally I'd start with the filter cause its easiest and cheapest.

Yeah, start with changing the filter, see if that does anything, if not, disconnect the fuel line and direct it into a bucket, put the car in acc and see if you are getting sufficient flow. Give us an update after you do that and we can tell you where to go from there.

Thanks for the help guys. I may go ahead and change the filter tomorrow if I get time.

I should also add that the only way it'll start is if I leave the choke on. I mean, it always has to be on if you want any hope of getting it to start. I'm new to rotory's and carb's for that matter so I don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

Mine had the same problem when I first bought it. I rebuilt the carb and changed the filter and it still wouldn't run for more than 5 sec. Then I dropped the gas tank and had it flushed( about 4 lbs of dirt and rust) and installed a carter fuel pump and now the car runs beautifully. Just my two cents.

I am having a little trouble like that. My other 79 after a good hard run (30 minutes doing 80 on the highway) when I about to stop to get some food cut off and me and had to wait about 5 minutes for it to start again. I previously cleaned the gas tank, new filter. I am thinking the fuel pump is acting up or maybe the points system. I will check eventually.

look on the driver side behind the seat. pull out the compartment and pull up the carpet and the padding find the feul pump wires then find out which one is the positive and run it to the ignition fuse so when you turn on the ignition the feul pump will start when you turn off the key it will stop this may be your problem! i hope this work for you (good luck)

Jerry, it sounds like your stutter valve might be bad, my car did that too when I first drove it, then I removed all the emissions junk and blocked off the stutter valve and it hasn't done it since. And to leaf... try the fuel pump, if it is bad, replace it with an aftermarket one in case you want any futire upgrades.

What's the best way to test the fuel pump to see if it's good? Who would you recommend for a good after market unit?

i mange to get it to go it will idel for 2sec then die soo i screwed the idel screw right in thinkin this will keep the sucker goin well i had a little trouble but got it goin idled really fast for bout 5-10 seconds sounds like nothins wrong but everytime it just dies iv played with timing acell pump nut, mixture screw
i have everything for it to run fuel, air, spark theres fuel comin from the jets(primary)

heres what i have 12a nikki,no emmisions,2gendf,jusr added a block off plate to the manifold im pretty sure its not leaking seeing vaccum leak causes higher revs guess thats not my problem

do you think i have somthin clogged inside the carb it was runing okay before i did the block off plate but not positive on that

fuel pump kinda costly im sure if im gettin fuel should be fine or does it need pressure
i really dont want to take my manifold off seeing i just filled it up with fresh coolent
it should be air tight i used jb weld on the holes and also put liquard gasket between the block off plate

my car had the same problem, after rebuilding the carb, I discovered it was the fuel pump. I would change few filter, first, if that doe snot work, it could be carb setting, or fuel pump. As I said on my car it was the fuel pump.

Ted.

I will give you an update since this look likes a common thing with 79 and 80 cars. The GAS tank! I just saw my new fuel filter full of rust again, this a third filter in three days. Also there are some check valves underneath the car that go bad also. I am dropping the tank down again. I had cleaned it but didn't reline it. I bought the Eastwood gas tank cleaner/sealer kit. I will let you know in a few days because it's a lengthy process.

blwfly- did you lift up the car and used a gas can temporarily to see????? I think that is your main problem.....

Got to the autoparts store and buy about 3 feet of 5/16 non fuel injected fuel line. You can see the line that goes into the fuel pump, if it's factory it will say in and out, connect to in and go from there. put you hose to a gas can and go frome there.

hay there i got an update for ya
ok i cleaned and rebuilt carb this mornin all mint and clean

i pump the pedal 4-5 times and it starts and runs for bout 5-10 seconds depending on how many times you pump gas will determine run time lol

after little tuto slightly pushin the pedal i got it to run longer but had lots of trouble keepin it up and also got lots off backfireing

backfiring dose it usally come out the carb??
how bad is it for the engine only did it a few times till i decided to give up

so in the end i must have a fuel problem being the fuel pump what ya think can lack of fuel cause backfiring got me there?

iv did things like fuel line test seemed to flow sweet.i got spark,im gettin nice squirts from the jets, fuel filters fine.

cheers
chris
