running 2 alternators?

Would it be feasible or logical to run 2 alternators? I would be able to mount the second one where the air pump went, as some people relocate their single one to that location. Wiring seems easy enough as I would just need to split 2 wires and run another main power from alt to battery.

Heres the questions:

Would the alternators HAVE to put out the exact same power at said rpms?

I have 3 stock 55 amp alternators, would it be better (less engine draw) to use 2 55's versus a single 110 (or 100 whatever the FD has)?

Not sure about the belt situation. I would have to assume it could be ran with an air pump belt, or possibly a size near the stock air pump belt. Currently running yoohoo, and it seems that all i would have to do is run without yoohoo and simply use the air pump sized belt to run both alts off the e-shaft. Opinions?

You _can_ do it, I saw a show CRX that had five alternators to run its sound sytem.

The car audio guys run duel alts all the time.

I dont see a reason why what you suggest will not work.

I know it is possible for car audio apps, as this is basically what it is going to be used for. Alot of setups I have seen though, have the 2nd alt going to a 2nd batt. Can I run 2 alts to 1 batt? Also for those of you who have relocated the alt, what size belt did you use? I really think this would work but also wanted some opinions on the matter. I was also wondering about the load on the engine itself. Mainly because I would rather buy a FD alt if it actually will be a drastically lower engine load than to run 2 smaller alts. If it is relatively close, then I will just stick with the 2 alts as I have them already and they have been tested as good.

Two will pull a bit more power just to turn them both. But an alt is really in free run when it does not have a power load need.

For a belt just go to the parts store and tell them the lenght that you think is close to what you need. Try it and then go up or down based on if it is tight or long.

You may want to hit the audio forums for info on how to wire it all.

Use a string to measure the length of the belt you will need. No going back and forth for the right size.

I'd just got for the single FD alt... Less points of failure, less engine load, no messy rewiring, no extra belt.

I believe there was also a mod you could do to an AC/Delco alternator from a Buick or something that got you 130-140 Amps.

my vote would be for the fd alternator, id be willing to bet it takes more to power two 55amp alts than just one 100amp one.

yeah, if you're wanting to use two 55amps to equal the strength of the fd alt. Why not just get the FD alt in the first place? So you don't have to worry about the wiring, belts, and such.....I just replaced mine with an 80amp and just picked up a 110 off an FD to slap in there.

If you don't have your A/C, you could always place an alternator in that position. I don't like the heat in the area where the air pump was at. I am working on this right now. Only thing is the A/C bracket doesn't square up the alternator pulley with the rest, it is slightly off. At high rpms, this could throw the belt. I've already slotted the bracket, it's just a matter of getting the right size belt and running the wires now. Only thing I'm worried about now is the alt. will bump the FC coil I have mounted on the side of the strut tower when I tension the belt

I'm using a 130 amp alt that came out of an old Caddy. I bought it rebuilt for 50 CDN, and making it fit was an hour job. I'm very happy with the results. No more struggling to run a electric fan, headlights breaklights and heater. Think about it. most cost effective, and easy solution to high amp needs. Although the FC alt is probbably better suited to higher RPMs, Mine has held up for about a year so far, and no problems.
