Run my Mikuni 44PHH without filters?
ive been doing some reading and i have found that alot of people say that the side draft carb cars run ALOT better without filters.
should i run my mikuni 44PHH without filters? should i at least run some metal screen mesh around the velocity stacks? i currently run the oiled foam UNI filters and ive been told those are very restrictive.
my FB is not my daily driver, its my weekend fun car.
the motor is currently out of the car getting painted and my entire engine bay is being redone and all unessesary parts are being removed. looking to clean up the carb and getting rid of those ugly UNI filters will help for sure.

You can, at your own risk. Engine will suffer premature wear due to all of the dust and grit that goes through it. Engine can also suffer catastrophic failure from a small rock or bolt/nut, that may get sucked in. Personally, I won't run w/o a filter, it's just not worth it anymore.

i understand what you guys are saying. it just seems that everythig about the mikuni carb is taboo and nobody knows much about them anymore. ive been looking for a nice K&N filter setup for the carb but even the places that sell the similar webbers cant even tell me if the mikuni uses the same filter setup.
my engine and engine bay are spotless and i dont drive my rx-7 in the rain, on dirt roads or any of that. i undertsand the risk involved in running an open carb but what about screens on the carb?
i just wish some mikuni people on this forum would quit being tight wads with info iand just telling everyone to search.
getting to the point of just selling the mikuni and manifold and gettin something that has at least a little customer support

you can run any weber filter but here's the key: grind the outer edge of your air horns

heres is what i have on my dell. a friend of mind had to get a rounded out air bleed valve out of my carb. he also decided to make me this "filter" set up.
i have only driven the car once or twice with this. i bought some pantie hose to put around it. i just havent got around to it yet. i may put it on today. i woudlnt run without a filter, just too much of a risk. so you need something.
he made it out of the material they use for wind tunnel testing on model cars. this is what they use to similate a radiator.

You need to run a filter or dust will cause premature engine wear and it will not last as long, that is fact. The Uni filters suck ***** and flow as well as a pair of jeans. I gained 10 rwhp by just taking them off. Do yourself a favor and just buy a good k&n setup.

If you just used a screen or stocking over the air horns it will screw up the air flow into the carb. Your best bet is a K&N setup for a weber and make sure its about 1.5" taller on the inside than the top if the air horns or it will not let the carb breathe optimally.
I have the Dell with the RB supplier foam filter and its so tall it barely clears the oil fill tube so that the air horns have enough room.

The first and the second filters are not good choices, they don't give the air horns enough head room for the air to enter them freely. My understanding is that the filter and the mesh disturb the flow going into the horns and the extra room in the filter above the horns allows the air to flow better into the horns.
How about this one, model 99217.532

I wouldn't. They've been known to either fall apart and get sucked right into the motor. Or, the metal mesh is obstructing too much flow and your HP drops.
Just get a nice K&N filter with end plates for a Weber DCOE. It uses the same bolt pattern as Mikuni. Make sure there is enough room from the tip of the stack to the plate. So it will be able to draw in air. 1.25" minimum.

did you try searching?
There is plenty of information about the Mikuni on this site and I have even posted up a place to get information on the carburetor as well have others.
FYI: The OER carburetor that others sell is supposed to be the same design and probably takes the same filter setup.

On my old S-10, it made a kickass resonance off the bottom of the hood when you took the aircleaner off, but I would only ever do it just after a good rain. It sure sounded badass. Would I do it again - no.
Unless it sounded really super cool. Only because I didn't respect the old boinger engine anyway.
