God. That kind of cry-baby behaviour makes me mad. The rotary is not all-powerful. Piston engines have a decided torque advantage over rotaries. Our engines, while fantastic, are not insurmountable opponents. Apparently, competing with rotaries just smacks of effort.

MosesX605 is absolutely correct. Plus ~2 years ago Tambourine tube-frame Miata with Mandeville 13b 2-rotor peripheral port and ALL the tricks everywhere could not Qualify for the Daytona 24 race in the American GT Class. BITCHIN CAR, don't get me wrong I would love to buy it. But he's now petitioning to race in SCCA GT-2.
To tell you the truth the number of cars racing the fast $ classes in GrandAm has been decreasing over the years. This year's Daytona 24 has the smallest entry list in 20 years!!!
The only thing keeping them afloat are the GS/ST classes that race smaller cheaper cars like Honda and BMW. GrandAm is on life support now. AmericanLemans is the way of the future and allows rotaries too.
The golden rule is: whoever gives the most gold gets the best rules. And Porsche and BMW have given lots of $ to get the good rules. Mazda's rules for rotaries just suck. Not competetive, but luckily Downing and Spencer are still out there trying to compete in the AMLS LMP 675 class and keep the rotary alive in pro road racing.
Rotaries are not placing on top ranks of professional road racing anymore. The rotaries sweeping in IMSA GTU and R/S in the 80's is a thing of the past. Rotaries aren't even competetive in ITA anymore: that's why IT7 was made.
We just need fairer rules!

This sucks!!! They have banned the rotaries from so many classes now... And when they are allowed they have to cope with rules that are making it very hard to be competitive (think about Bathurst 2002...)
Just when Le Mans was won, they got outlawed by the FIA for sports car championships. Now Daytona...
Maybe it's time to get a ALL-rotary championship going.
Well anyway, if you have to outlaw rotaries to win from them, you're one poor idiot.

almost every track is outlawing the Rotary engine. i was going to compete in a local track over here this year with a rx7 and about two month ago they outlaw it. i talk to the track maneger presonally and he told me that rotary are too fast for any competition. i think is not. because they had a big weight rule and others rules for rotary. think about this
heres part of the rules of the track:
of piston powered car the weight is 1.15 pound per cc
for rotary powered car the weight is 2.25 pound per cc
heres another part of the rule
for piston they allow any 4 cilinder engine as long if it the same engine that came with the car
for rotary they allow only 12a engines
another rule too: for piston the allow to change cams, piston, cranck, injectors, exhaust (headers and the hole exaust)
for rotary the engine (including the carb) have to be stock only allow to change exaust with a noise lever of 95db at 50 feet.
if you compere all the rules for a civic and for rx7. there alot of differece. that why most rotary powered car arent as fast as they use to be. but i still love them

First of all...piston engines can be just as fast as rotarys with a good brain and some cash...
So why oh why outlaw rotarys?
okok, so you cant pull your weight around on a track by doing everything people did before you and putting some cash into it....duh big deal, get a damn brain before you take to the track.
Any idiot can go to a shop and order whatever it takes to get a car on the track....it takes alot more to be inventive with your car to be able to take it to the track.
All i ever heard from people who dislike rotarys are things like....

I dont have anything againts pistoncars....aslong as its repectable...say a mustang v8..great sound, great driving.
I dont have a problem with hondas...as long as its respectable! Any idiot can spend 10k on a honda and make it into a rice rocket...but personally ive never seen anyone make their own turbo setup for a honda....i have seen alot of people weld their own turbosetup for the rex....for me thats a good sign at where the skillz are at!
The most amusing ricers are the people with a 1.5 civic vtec claiming they are running 300+ hp...and ofcourse the extravagant tailwing gives them alot more traction on their fwd civic...lol.

If you wanna be a real tuner....get yourself an old car and put some damn effort instead of tons of money into it!

one of the cool things about rotaries and one of the top things in endurance reacing, is that they last. some teams use the same engine for 2-3 race seasons. thi being a rather nice thing to a racing budget.

They could be banning the rotary just to keep things similar, not because they are better or faster. I'm not saying I agree with the ban. I just think everyone is getting too upset over it.

People are afraid of what they don't know or understand. Rotary is different, makes lots of noise and revvs real high and people are afraid. So it's banned. It's not being banned because it's winning, because rotary simply is not winning in PROFESSIONAL auto racing. As such I think Grand-Am just gave up on it since rotary wasn't doing much.
Rotary CAN and IS being regulated in SCCA Amateur road racing. Engine size (12A or 13B) and Intake port type is large determiner, as is carburetor choke size.
I don't agree with the ban. The Grand-Am rules were making rotary uncompetetive. Engines not in this years rules CAN be petitioned to be allowed so it might not be over yet.
And simply put if you don't like the way Grand-Am plays, you can go play somewhere else (AmericanLeMans).

Just got the Summit Sport Compact catalog and the IHRA made the 1st gen, all motor (forget the driver's name and the catalog is at home right now) driver take out the 3 rotor and put the 2 rotor back in. He followed all their requests and now they are already talking about still adding more weight to his car again even though he followed their requests!!! Like he says in the article, he was winning too much. (7 straight wins)
