Room for kids, groceries, and Subwoofer!

Hey guys, I'm a newbie here and it shows. I just want to show you that a poor college student made a backseat and subwoofer all for $180 total (including sub, amp, and wood)!! Well here are some pics... I think you can get it.

If you have any questions, ideas, or want more pictures, I would be happy to answer.

No carpet on the box? Why, is there a reason?

I can't see that being as too safe for some reason 4 people in a rx-7... it just doesn't seem right. But its always inspiring to see people do work to there own car. Even if its not something that I would do, which it isn't I still think its pretty cool that you did it on a college budget!

i dont think u would need seatbelts with it being such a tight space i dont think u could move very far before slamming into the front seats now the middle person would go through for sure. If you got hit in the back they would be crushed... but still thats pretty cool that you were able to do that just add some seatbelts and get matching interior colors. Nice job!

Carpet? That was actually my intent on the car. But of course when I priced some nice carpet it was always pretty expensive. I will probably do it when I get a good paying job though, I'll probably fix it up a lot more too.

Seatbelts? Nah. Actually if somebody were to sit in it, they would have to sit sideways. I put so many 80's style cushions down that most of my friends say it's more comfortable back there than in the seat! I don't believe them, but that's what they say (I do know they are always falling asleep back there). Anyway, having a seatbelt while sitting sideways is somewhat benign.

Kids? Hehehe... yeah... you're right... I don't have kids though... Thank God... Not this early in life...

Ghetto? Definitly, I bought the car for 400, spent a good 1,200 on everything and it has lasted 3 years so far (I use it everyday). It's got 210K on it so I am suspecting it to go anytime. If I had a nice car I would do nice things, but the whole car screams ghetto... so I do ghetto things. And I always listen to 80's music while I'm in it.

My new (nice) one is in my Avatar.

reminds me of the good ol getto college days. Ofcourse, I would never want a rear seat in a RX-7, its small enough as it is and I like the storage bins, and its part of the advantage that its easier to control one passanger in a 2 seater car better then 2 or 3 drunks in improvized seats in the car that will be pushing the gross weight limits of the car. :O

Yeah, the occupant maximum weight is something like 375 pounds

I've had a passenger who weighs over 300 pounds and it felt like the car was going to give up on me lol. I don't know what driving around 2 college kids, a ghetto seat, and a sub would be like

Yeah... BTW, the stock seats break REAL easy in a crash (ask me how I know)... 130lbs of person nailing a seat in the back would break it for sure...

I had backseats in mine Dan. REAL ones... uber rare in North America... I can get a small adult back there, but I wouldn't keep them there for long... or it might be permanent...

I sat in the back of my moms until I was 10

I thought about building/acquiring a back seat...but theres really not enough room back there for anything except a skinny chick (not that id complain really).

For a while I had a 2x10 qlogic truck box with kenwood 10" subs and a 400 watt RMS amp. I barely had enough spare room to fit a frickin box of mountain dew back there!

Oh, and I like the wooden hatch support device. ^.^

The sub sounds awesome right there. It is facing the rear glass hatch so it bounces off of it real nice. If I wanted, I could even get that thing to give me a massage. I keep the volume real low (1.5 out of 10) on the sub and I still think it's too loud sometimes

Like I said before, this concoction allowed a full size adult to sit sideways in the back. Everyone of them so far say it's real comfortable!

The back seat also doubles as great storage space, much more than those bins. I have fit my full drum set comfortably in the car... pulling out a full size set (bass, 5 toms, 5 cymbals, snare, a whole bunch of stands) really turns some heads at gigs. I think some people are more impressed with the packing than the music.

Anyway, here are some more pics. One of them I am just trying to show how the backseat was cut so it would not obstruct my rearview mirror view. The other shows where the amp went.

You must have a rather small drum set...Even with my subs removed I couldnt fit any of my bass stuff into the back. Managed to fit 1/2 of the stack in the back against the front seats...but then the hatch wouldn't close.

Same with the head unit...managed to get it into the passenger seat...but the door wouldnt close... :P

Hm...nice amp tho...I'm a huge fan of kenwood's products

Work like that should never be photographed. It will just further the already prolific notion that it's okay to trash a first gen 7.

Took me a while with the drum set. I put the bass drum in the front seat (it would barely fit, only if the seat was all the way back). I stacked the toms and floor tom in the "backseat." and all the cymbals and stands barely fit into the back by the sub. All the other little things (pedals, nick-knacks) fit into my toms. It can't fit any other way.

On the other note, One man's trash is another man's treasure. I'm not saying this isn't "trash." It is however, getting a poor rx7 lover to bring an already trashed (junkyard) car back to life, making it useful for everything in my life, all for 1,600 total. It has lasted 3 years too. I'm sure proud of that. Just because I don't have the money, doesn't mean I don't love the car.
