Moron? Maybe.
Maybe it's a cunning plan to get out of speeding tickets.
Because if I was a cop and pulled someone over and then looked in the dash to find stickers reading 200mph on the cluster, i'd **** myself laughing and have to and let them go.
Then again, if your in a first gen doing 200mph, you may need all the stickers you can get to hold it together!

because if someone is so obsessed with what a speedo goes to knowing full well they will never reach those speeds id tend to refer to them as a moron. and like i previously said i wont say what i really think.

I could get it close to the 140 mark, but thats another story, theres some real mixed feedback on my old cluster. Most the people that rode in thecar asked if it went that fast, and the answer was always the same. Not Yet. So looks like Ill have to tryout the TII cluster to know for sure if that will work.

Well i've had mine over 140MPH so it is possible without the TII cluster...
Maybe you could buy a separate speedo guage and install that in the original cluster, rather than trying to fit a TII cluster in a gen 1?

I like the gauge and calling him a moron was harsh, you know he knows the car can't go that fast it's a joke.

The Volkswagon GTi engineers are mororns? (They have a speedo that goes to 180 when the car can only go to about 140 just so when dumb non-enthusiast people buy it they look at the hopelessly inflated speedo and think the car can actually do it) Well I'd like to see you build a better car from scratch than the 2009 VW GTi.

Doesn't anyone take on a challenge for the fun of it anymore? I think its a good chalenge, and rewarding if it works. And never say never, a 500somehorse 13b, TII tranny (.71 5th gear) and a 3.9 rear end, it should get damn close to those speeds. I mean a stock FD will hit 160+
Its the room for growth. If one of those volkswagon owners, decides to put in a turbo VR6, then at least they can see where they top out, without having to change the speedometer.
My mom for instance had one of those new beetles, with a 160mph speedo in it. That car I dont think could even hit 120 to save its life. But say someone wants to beef up the motor, at least they can see how fast theyre going.

if the challenge has a point them i am all about it. but something like uselessly putting a TII cluster in your car when an 83 gives you exactly the same end result is retarded. actually its retarded when the 83 cluster is plug and play and gives you all the correct monitoring options that the TII cluster wouldnt.

Correct!!!!!!
use the plug and play option and save your hard earned money!!!
Put THAT money you have saved towards making the CAR go faster, not the speedo READING a faster speed...
Just seems crazy wasting money like that

??? So you would all build your motor/drivetrain setup first, and then worry about it having it display correctly?. Whats wrong with doing that part first, so its ready to go when all is done? I could find one for like $50; hows that a waste? I was originally asking to see if a TII cluster would plug and play, but it doesnt sound like anyone knows for sure or not (beyond the warning lights). Its not like Im spending $1000 for a Ferrari cluster here

then go for it, tell us how it went. and swap over to a TII engine and tranny. keep the TII speedo cable. and make sure you have the same rear end ratio as a TII. then figure out a way to put the TII idiot lights in. i'm not sure it will work. but you might as well try it if you want

As has been stated, I don't think it is worth trying to swap in a T2 cluster. External dimensions will be different. Even though the electrical connectors are similar, you should check the factory wiring diagrams for each car and compare them. I got $20 that says something is different. Then there is the bigger fact that you lose your warning light cluster. Not a smart idea.
If you really want a faster speedo, get a new face made up and figure out the math to replace the speedo gear.
EDIT:
Here, I have done the work for you:

Notice the number of pins is different. Also notice the keyways do not match up, and the wires do not match.

Well, damn! Thank you for that Sgt. Fox!, It looks like it would work with rewiring, and custom warning lights. It is indeed a much better idea, to go with a custom face plate, and just change (or custom make) the gear. Ill have to look into this. Looks like you would have won $20

and to answer your question yes i sure as hell would build the drivetrain before worrying whether my speedo was correct. the only function i have for a speedo is to make sure im not going to be pulled over. i only look at the thing when i see a chp. other gauges are a hell of a lot more important than a speedo
