Restoration finished on my 1979 Limited!

So a couple years ago, I started a thread (Restoring my '79 Limited: A Journey - Page 2 - RX7Club.com) when I began the restoration process on my '79 Limited. I stopped updating mostly because the process was taking much longer than anticipated and I wasn't particularly as happy as I was expected about the result. Since then, though, I have really come to fall back in love with my car.

Long story short, this car bounced around three different shops during the process. The second shop, after completing the body work and priming, closed down. They also lost some of my body pieces in the process. The third shop completed the paint but there were some places he screwed up on. I just had the tint done yesterday, and I really like the way it looks now. I figure now's as good a time as any to share.

Here it is!

Picked up the glass sunroof a few years back for $200. Pretty hard to find for an SA.

Still missing some lenses. The shop lost them and I really haven't looked too hard for them yet. I should probably get on that...

New door trim cost me about $100 per side. Seats still need upholstered.

Pro tip: You can replace the OE ashtray with a cup holder from a 90-97 Miata:

My stereo auxiliary cable feeds into the arm rest.

Stereo console painted the same color as the car (sorry for blurry picture)

Slight bubbling I'm getting on the driver quarter panel - one of the reasons the restoration had me so frustrated for a long time.

Yeah, I know that the original beat black color was what it came with, but I had a black car for a while and they're a nightmare to keep clean. I also like to have not only a rare edition, but also a unique color. Lecture me about it all you want, I've heard it all before.

Congratulations on getting your car this far. These things can be a labor of love as it's apparent yours is too you. You're right in that you are the only one you have to please and you have every right to spend your money how you wish on what makes you happy. Your build doesn't bother me even though I am one of the "purists" that like to see cars like this restored to original specs.

Thats because you aren't trying to pass it off as an factory, authentic Limited. To me, having all the right parts in the right places and the proper colors is what MAKES it a Limited. A lot like the debate over pushrod motors being blasphemy in one of these cars. The important thing is you enjoy your car the way you want it. Next time anyone gives you grief, you could just tell them you kept the badges as a homage to the cars origins.

Congrats! Going back and looking at your original thread after seeing these pictures was crazy!

Personally, I'd be pissed about the bubble in the fender. I know there are no guarantees with rust repair but I'd still be pissed. The **** retentive inside me wants to ask about the (apparent) orange peel....or is it just the camera? If it is orange peely, is the clear on thick enough to do some compounding/buffing/polishing??

Looks great either way! Enjoy!!
