I have a friend that needs to remove a 82 dash to swap and they r not really mechanially inclined. i need a step by step. but if it is 2 complicated ill tell them not to bother with it. thanks

Why do they need to replace it? If it is crack Victoria British, sells replacement covers that glue on and are supposed to look decent.

 

I'm a mechanically inclined person and it took me all day. There are about 5 million little 8mm nuts in there!! Whoever designed that dash should be shot.

 

you don't have to rip the sash out ot get at the instrument cluster do you?

 

You can get the gauges out withouth dash removal but its not easy or fun. Interior work in general is a pita.

guages = easy!!! just remember that there are screws holding it in in back on either side of the steering column. You have to pull out that vent duct to get to them. Disconnect your battery and put the hazard light switch in-between on and off, and you can slide it right out without removing anything but the guage cluster!!

 

thanks but now i think i am going to help after hearing this becasue the old dash sux and the replacement is brand new so if you could pleese e mail me the step by step directions at bigrtii@comcast.net this would be so helpful. i will give them the directions n e way becasue thay are being so stubborn on doing it so please i really nee those directions

The previous owner (? or previous owner before him?) put one of those VB covers on. The dash cluster outer cover no longer fits right. If one looks at the vent areas, you can see the second layer, it seems to be a slightly different material than the original dash and mine is cracked too! So not only do I have an ugly dash, but I have an ugly, cracked dash cover too

Take the time and replace the dash. Better in the long run. Unfortunatley it seems like the subframe under the dash also has to be removed to completely remove the dash (some hidden fasteners on the dash). I took out the dash in my '82 parts car just to find out how hard it is going to be in my '83 There are some fasteners on each side of the dash under the small plastic covers between the dash and the door. The defrost strip has to be removed on top of the dash and there are three or foud fasteners beneath it. The dash cluster has to be removed along with the column cover and steering wheel. Probably a good idea to take out the multifunction switch on the column too. Remove the center console covers and there are a couple of fasteners under there. Pull off the HVAC controls and radio controls if you haven't already. I think that is about it for get the subframe loose enough to move towards the rear of the car (removing the seats may help with room and being able to manuever around better). Once you get a good look behind the subframe you'll see the remaining 3-5 fasteners that hold the dash to the subframe. Be careful because if you start pulling on the dash before all of the fasteners are taken off you'll crack it!
