It is very encouraged to run in your car. I've got one and love it to death

Whats the difference in owning a red top over just a general battery?

EDIT: I know for better CCA's and whatnot.

I had an optima red top, and it was a great battery for a while. My local Murray's just stopped carrying them because they were so hit and miss. Mine died after only about 10 starts. I have another sealed, spiral cell, deep cycle battery in there now, and so far it's held up to the abuse.

It has about half the cold cranking amps of the Optima (bad), but it's much smaller, too (good). Don't know about the longevity. Optimas have a very good reputation for vibration resistance and shelf life. We used them in the Air Force for ground support equipment since some of it would sit idle for a long time between starts. The Optimas were very good.

Our vehicles for the stock system do not require alot of cranking amps.

When you start adding large stereo amps and other aftermarket accessories or tend to leave your key on with the engine shut off while listening to the stereo. That is where the extra cranking amps or actually reserve capacity comes in handy.
The biggest key is the output of the alternator. If you upgrade to large draw stereo systems or aftermarket electric fans then you also need to increase the output ability of your alternator.
You can have the biggest baddest battery there is but if the alternator does not have the capability to recharge the used amps adequately, the whole system will fail including the burning up of the alternator.
