Rebuild question

I hav noticed that some of the guys around here rebuild quite often. Are they spending 700+ for the rebuild gasket set every time? Or are some of our gaskets reuseable?

EDIT: Gusee i should have put this in a general section, I just spend most of my time looking through the 1st gen section so it was only natural to post here

You don't need the complete factory engine gasket kit. Its a waste of money.

I recommend buying the engine gasket kit from rotary aviation. The seals are reusable. I use a little high temp copper gasket maker on them. As for the seals outside the block... use gasket maker. Apply according to the directions on the tube to the intake manifold, oil pan, water pump, front cover...etc.

You can also buy sheets of gasket material from auto parts stores. Just trace the old pattern on the material and cut out a new gasket with scissors.

So you just RTV everything external? Red, Blue, or Black?

yes, any RTV that says 'high temp' will be fine on external parts. I like the black because it doesn't stand out as much as the red, orange, or blue
