I've not had one open, but there will be a switch in the motor housing that grounds the motor untill it returns to the home position. You would have to open it up and clean or replace the switch.

Stopping in the down and flat position was a stupid design. It creates more drag.. although very little.
I think I rigged mine to stop in the up position. Havent been able to put it on the car and check cause the seals to the glass are rotten out and new ones are not available... yet.
I swapped wires on the motor. There are two on one side and one on the other. I took both off the two side and put them on the side that had 1 in the beginning. I put the one on the side that had 2 in the beginning.
On reassembly, I'll put the wiper in the up position.
When I turn the wiper on, It'll expect to be in the down powition and swing up. But the motor is reversed, so it'll swing down. Hence switching positions when it's off is crucial, otherwise it'll sweep off the edge of the hatch. The gears direct the length of the swing arc.
Gotta test it with the wiper not against the glass in case it doesn't work right. Pick it up like you're replacing the blade and turn it on.
