Rear spoiler. Which one???
I am looking at picking up a rear spoiler for the 84 in my sig. I am figuring with the power I am going to be making, and the newer tranny I am hoping to spend alot of time in the 120-130MPH range.
So here is what I have looked at.
Whale tail; looks like it will add alot of downforce at speed, but it also looks heavey, and like its going to creat ALOT of drag. Have had no problems finding there on the net.
Duck bill; Looks like it will produce moderate down force, and alot less drag. I have heard somewhere that the duck bill actually reduces the coeficent of drag. is this true??
I have had alot of dificulty finding any on-line. The ones I have found have all been used and in not so good shape.
Thgen there is the ever present Ricer wing.
This looks like it will produce as much downforce as I want. But it looks like it belongs on a honda..... I suppose that isnt an option.
So does anyone have any ideas, or know where I can find a duck bill???
Micah

i thought the definition of rice was parts that dont have any function....whats wrong with one of those spoilers if its legitiment - a RWD 7 with some power. its not like its going on a FWD honda thats all stock except for the spoiler, exhaust, and intake.

I am anti rice as well. But like the 7 pointed out, its only rice if it dosent work.
And one of the high rise spoilers, will most certaintley be effective at 130mph. Therefore it has to be considered.

Talk all you want about the wing being rice, but downforce to drag ratio its the best design, if its designed properly. Why do you think race cars the world over use them?

Yeah, but that car above also looks like it would weigh in much more then 2350lbs mine does(with me in it). I don't think anyone needs a wing on a 1st gen. I saw a silver FB with rust and paint damage with a shiney aluminum wing, what the hell is the point, it sounded and appeared to be stock or near stock? I think anything without a turbo, perpheral, big j-port, or nitrous doesn't need a wing really.
Then It all comes down to the bling-rice-image factor that it somehow "maginfies" its good looks or ruins it, and gets more stares from the cops and others that are "impressed" or "sickened" by it and do something to your car unpleasent.

I'm very partial to the "stock" IMSA/ducktail style spoiler... I've got one on mine and I think it and the IMSA air dam accentuate the cars lines without looking like a tacky afterthought...
See what I mean? And I've noticed that the spoiler package DOES work at sane highway speeds... car feels much more stable at 80 mph than my old '81 GSL did and it turns more heads, as an added benefit...

Yeah, I absolutely LOVE the duck tail spoiler. It's pretty much the only addition to the body that doesn't look out of place, IMHO. I'm planning to buy one for my SA right away.

Yea, I think I am sold on the duck bill.
I did happen to find a few on the www.nopi.com web-site. Close to $190.
any other options out there?

love the braaaap
I know that my idea isn't the best for weight, but I think that a widebody kit with a nice whale tail wing in the back would look awsome. The drag wouldn't be too great because the widebody kit (correct me if i'm wrong) is supposed to decrease the drag coefficient of the car in stock form without a wing. I think with this combination the drag wouldn't be any more than a stock RX-7. If the car is for racing perposes, the extra weight can be taken off by removing unused parts in the car.

First of all the car in the pic is not mine so I can't say what the weight is... as for mine the idea is to get the car as light as possible and increase performance. Yeah adding wider fenders add weight, but you could do the ideal weight reduction of adding carbon parts.
Composite materials though expensive are ideal in a performance oriented project. I am in the process of building this kit and then going minimalistic on the interior as far as sound dampening goes. The chassis will be foam sealed (structural foam) which will provide some sound dampening, but little to no tar mat will be used. The entire chassis will be stripped so that only one layer of paint will be on the car further reducing weight. Other possiblities include the replacement of the glass with lexan parts.
These are just some the the things I had in mind to compensate the added weight of the body kit. My ideal situation would be to match the stock weight after the kit is installed.
Toxic
BTW the wing was a gift from my wife... the whale tail is the one I would go with over the duck bill

http://selectmaz.com.au/main_frame.htm has the best first gen spoilers, imo...
Euro B and SS, Tornado SS, and Cyclone body kits all have what appear to be the same spoiler. Some pics have a light in it, and some pics don't, so they are probably two different spoilers that are otherwise similar.
They look awesome, but cost about $200
Shipping will damn near double that figure
So they probably aren't an option for most of us, eh?
Too bad-their body kits start at $650 and go up to $900 for the top of the line. Damn cheap if ya think about it-but there's that damnable shipping again

I have a stock rear spoiler for sale, but I have no idea on how much it would cost to ship.
