Think it is just the driveshaft rubbing against the heat shield. Nothing major. Don't throw the car away. I more than likely have a home for it rather than send it to the crusher. I have several there already.
I will be looking at the noise after work. Shouldn't take me long to fix it.

Rice Racing does not drag race his car.
An easy option would be to get a GSL-SE diff, it has larger axles and diff centre. Just to be sure though, get some billet axles made up. I had the standard Series 3 diff and LSD for 2 years and never broke it, but thats because I never had traction.
I did a BIG diff conversion and now I don't have to worry about my diff anymore! Go here for a look at what I now have ---> http://www.ajc13b.com/current_7.htm

The diffs are the same S1/2 and S3, the only difference is that the side gears in the S3 have larger splines to accomodate the larger axles... the diffs themselves will interchange if you swap over to the correct side gears. Doing that requires removal of the ring gear so you can slide the cross shaft out. Alternatively you can just do burnouts until the cross shaft walks and snaps.
Plenty of people have V8 converted RX-7s with stock diffs and no trouble... like you said, the problem is that you generally can't fit enough traction under the car, and of course there's driver use/abuse.
