Rear End Swap Question

I just made the LSD/Disc Brake Swap and everything went very smootly until I went to bolt the drive shaft to the third member and the holes don't line up? I was told this was a very straight forward swap. The car is a 1985 GS and the rear end is out of a 1982 GSL. I was wondering if I could take the piece off (sorry don't know name of part) the old and bolt it on the new and have them line up completely.
Help somebody the car isn't driveable and needs to be finished this weekend.

You should be able to swap the flanges (#27020) as shown in this drawing. My local Mazda dealer can still get the flange hardware for around $50. (ignore my blue text refering to the oils seal in the pic.) I checked on this as I am doing the same swap probably next weekend!

You either need to swap the flange, or get the driveshaft from the 82. 79-82 used replaceable u-joints, 83-85 were non-serviceable and had a larger flange.

I not really a fan of taking apart my new LSD and changing the flange that way, kinda scared of it not going back together the correct way or ruining it in the same time. I would rather change the flange on the driveshaft first if that is a possibility. Let me know.

Only way to change the driveshaft flange, is get a complete shaft from a 79-82. As stated, the u-joints are different, making the flange non-interchangeable.

Just get the driveshaft from the '82, then; as Rogue Wulff explains. My swap goes opposite: 82 GS upgrading to the '83 GSL. I have yet to actually do the swap, though. I assume I'll have the same issue with the bolt pattern, but I'll definitely spin off that nut and swap flanges rather than change to the '83 drive shaft.

i think you can just use the 82 driveshaft if you have it and as rouge wolf said they're also a little nicer cause the have replacable u-joints

I can go two ways I can get a 82 driveshaft easy if I can find one, or I can swap the flanges on the third member. If I swap the flanges could I reuse the flange off my 85 GS rearend? if not what year flange should I get for the third member, this is starting to confuse me!

I assume that you can re-use your '85 GS rear-end flange on the "new" '82 third member; then, use your current '85 driveshaft. (Many prefer the earlier driveshafts, though, as the u-joints can be replaced.)
I plan to use my '81 GS flange on the "new" '83 GSL third member. Then, I can keep my current '81 driveshaft. Basically, the flange must match the driveshaft as you know the bolt patterns are different.

I've swapped flanges on the diff with no issues. Just used an air impact wrench to take off the nut. Popped off the one flange, installed the other style.

I don't think that affects any of the diff setup.
