Rear Brakes

Hey guys... I have a question... I have stripped out one of my caliper holders on the back of my car. I am talking about the bracket that the caliper swings on and bolts to the axle housing with two 15mm bolts. I am having trouble locating one. I have been to the junk yard...however all I am seeing is cars with drum brakes...

My question is... How do I know which cars have disk brakes on the back...?

Thanks-

GSL & GSL-Se are the only 1st gen models with rear disc brakes stock from the factory.

Were their specific years for the GSL or GSL-SE? Or were they made throughout 79-85?

Come on, that's a Newbie question. You've been a member for how long? :-)

81-85 models had disc brakes.

Can't you use a slightly bigger bolt?

For some reason I cant get a tap to really take... I am assuming its because its just pot metal.

My next move is a heli-coil... If I can't find a bracket.

If you are talking about the bracket that bolts to the rearend housing, isn't there room enough to use a longer bolt, and put a nut on it?
The GSL bracket would be the only option, as the SE uses a larger diameter rotor, that is also thicker.
You can purchase reman calipers with the mounting bracket, but they're considerably higher priced than just the reman caliper by itself.

Actually the best way to get items like these is from a parts car. You need a GSL model (the GSL-SE has a different rear brake assy and will not fit your car and isn't legal either). We have found that just buying the whole car is the way to go. I parted out a badly rusted GSL and came away with an entire rear axle assy, trans, engine core, doors, header panel, two good front fenders, and an untold amount of reuseable harware and parts cores. If you have the space and the time a parts car rocks!

Another good source for used parts might be www.redlineunlimited.com. They came from an RX7 racing specialty company called RX7 Heaven. They should have this stuff used. You can also contact Charlie Clark at KC Raceware - www.kcraceware.com. He is an first gen EP racer and has built and raced numerous ITA/IT7 cars. Mazdatrix - www.mazdatrix.com - is still another possibility as they part out cars from time to time and may have what you need.

Finally if all else fails you can get these brackets new from autoparts stores by simply buying a loaded caliper assy. This is expensive for the rear because of the e-brake parts but you will get a caliper, bracket and all of the hardware. O'Rielly Auto Parts has these listed on their web site.

And don't forget about Mazda! If you have registered with Mazdaspeed - www.mazdamotorsports.com - you can buy new OE parts at a HUGE discount. I have purchased allot of stuff from them and paid much less than what a dealer would charge because I am a registered racer. Stuff like a new drive shaft, oil filters and brake hardware, etc.

Hope this helps
