Rear Brake Calipers
I have a question, my dad just gave me his 1984 Mazda Rx-7 that needs some work that I am going to do myself. I need to install new rear brake lines, and a driverside rear caliper. The car is orginally from Michigan, so it is rusted pretty badly. I am trying to get the caliper off and I can't get any of my tools (except for a wrench) onto the top bolt. Does anybody know how I might be able to get this top bolt off of the caliper. I have tried hitting a wrench with a hammer, but the bolt will not move.
Thanks,

I read your email
You don't need to get the top bolt off. In fact it's not a bolt at all. The so called top bolt is really just a pin that the caliper rotates on. Sounds like your's is seized up pretty good. I had one like that. Remove the bottom bolt and the parking brake cable and try rotating the caliper up. You may need a crow bar to do it. Once you get it to move drop some penetrating oil on the pin and keep working it untill you can pull the caliper off. It won't be easy but keep at it and you get that sucker off. Good luck!

If you look towards the inside there should be 3 bolts holding the calipers to the heat sheild. Trying spraying them with some lubricant and letting it sit for a little while. The rearend i had trouble with wasnt on the car so im not real sure what advice to give as far as getting to it. Maybe a really long extension with a pivot end. I think the bolt is a 12 or 14mm. I hope that helps some.

To get the caliper off you have to remove the hand brake cable and the bottom slide pin/bolt. The hand brake cable is a lot easier to remove if you loosen it up first inside the car. Hope that helps.

theres no need for cro-bars or anything like that, i wouldnt think. all you do is take out that bottom bolt and the entire caliper pivits up on the slider pin and slides off. nothing to it. then just undo the brake line from the caliper.
