Re: ignition coils and setup

alrite guys... i have my msd 6AL along with two MSD ignition coils running on my 13b streeport with IDA's but i want to do the THREE IGNITION COIL setup. i heard this is the way to go with this type of equipment i have. my question is... is there a holder that i can purchase or that someone has available or do i just have to custom make one??? i have no problems making one myself i'm just curious on how i should go about this and to see if anyone has any input or ideas on this matter. what is the ideal ignition setup??

Believe it or not, but there was a post made a few months ago that showed people showing pictures of how they setup 3 MSD boxes in their rides. I do know the member wackyracer posted up a picture along with other members.

Try doing a search in only the 1st Gen section on MSD setup. Look for something recent.

thanks i found the thread and that helps a lot about hooking up the setup. i also found a website that hooks u up with all kinds of tricks and upgrades for FB's

http://www.mazspeed.com/faq3.htm

but i have two last questions. when i connect the msd box to the dizzy I HAVE TO CUT THE PLUG THAT IS ATTACHED TO MY IGNITORS (red & green)?? i dont really want to ruin my distributor by cutting the plug. and i was also wondering how i should mount the 3 ignition coils??? at sevenstock i saw people who had them mounted in a triangle which i thought looked pretty cool.

Other's will more than likely bitch at the diagram layout, however I keep repeating myself: THIS CAME FROM MSD THEMSELVES.

Any discrepancies must be forwarded to MSD.

You can buy a single coil holder from summit and mount that thing anywhere, the other 2 coils can fit in the stock location

You should be able to find a small female spade that would keep you from cutting the plug off. I think most just cut it off. That is what made the 1980 dizzy so useful with MSD swap. There were long wires running to chassis mounted ignitors.

Back when we started out we had some coil holders. Have not made any in a while. We could run some if there was enough interest. Looked like this:

Dammit, can't believe I misinterpreted coils as boxes. In my defense, I just woke up.

I remember seeing those 3-coil brackets but couldn't figure out how one would setup 3 in the first place. I think ReSpeed just has the two coil bracket now.

3 Coils with one box works by using one coil for each leading ignition and one coil to share trailing ignition on both rotors = 3 coils

thanks for the ideas guys. i appreciate it... i think i might just go with buying a single coil holder and leaving the other two in the stock position but im afraid the spark plug wired might be too short. we'll what happens. thanks again

Look into getting 2nd Gen spark plug wires. Only $25 and I had to get them when I installed the 2nd Gen coil.

And, don't you need to have the MSD coils in an upright position? That's what their instructions say anyways, I don't know if you can get away with having them horizontal.
